With the help of a 'shoe horn'1 and two 'heavies'1, the Gary Mag- wood Mosport Racing School actually managed to pry, squeeze, shove, and stample (thatîs a cross between 'stamp' and 'trampiel) me into a sardine can. They called it "la sleek Formula Ford racing car"I - a Lazenby-Hawke DL2B to be precise. Real iz ing that my six foot, three inch, two-hundred pound body is sl ightly larger than average, i had chosen the 'big-boys' car vWhich, i found out later from Gary, couid have been adjusted to give me a little more leg room,, but w asn 't. The difficuity in enter ing (and exit- i ng) a single seater Formula car is compoundedby the fact that the cockpit i s 'so small' , the steer ing wheel is 'so lowl, and the hole under the steering wheei where you have to squeeze your legs through is even smailer. If you sufferfrom claustrophobia, I don't re- commend you try it, but if you are in- terested in 'going racing', it's a good (and cheap) way to find out if your like it, and more important - if you've got what it takes to make a race driver. Gary Magwood, the school's director ain d h e ad instructor who has won an impressive i ist of Canadian champion- ships, personaly gave me aprelliminary drive around the 2.45 mile Mosport circuit conducting a guided tour of the corners, theproper 'uines' through the corners, the braking points, and other p er t inent informati!on. Now in its s ec o nd year, the Gary Magwood Mosport Racing Schooi offers two courses. The preiiminary one-day course is a classroom t r ack -session in wvhich the basics of race driving are taught.
