WHITBY FREE PRESS, Thursday, July 20, 1972, page 7 BIRD'S à EVE WIEW JIN OUyA iL You Can'ft Go BRock Standing by the side of a swimming pool and watching thé kids splashing and playing and living in another world 1 knew that I could neyer go back ta that wor Id. 1 can remember I ining up ta get in ta the Kinsmen Pool on a hot summer day and 1 can remember racing out ta the w a ter and throwing mysel fin. Those were the days when a pool meant a real escape from the everyday world. When it cornes ta the ab il ity ta escape you really have to envy a child. If the w o r I d i s too much for them they ju st t r a n sp o s e themiselves inta a better worlId.* No matter how much money yau have or ho w influential y ou are, yau can neyer successfully return ta the warld of a child. Theirs is a world without prejudice or hatred. A chiîd can't see why black or yelîow skin is any reason ta shun a persan. Ta a child war is just an ad- ve nt u re to be played out in anearby 4e* vacant lot over grown with' tal1 grass and mound.% of Idirt, covered with weecis, 1Woul1d'nt'l tbence to be achld aga ln and flot know how to hate and most of al flot have a reason to hate or mis- trust. For a chlld there Is only yhe future to look forward to and very 1litti e past to worry about or try to hide or justif y. Because a chlld Is 50 vuinerable he doesn't yet have a hard protectIve sheli1 to hide behlnd and consequently a chlld can sense much more acutely and with less fear or belng foundout or penetra- ted. On a hot day the blggest problem to a child Is how to get to that cool re- freshing w a t e r at the Kinsmen Park. The line seems endless and It moves ever sa slowl y but ail of a sudden there It ls! , cool water and a chance to get ta the diving board without waiting forever. OnIy a child could imagine that four feet fram the board to the wvater as a distance so great that you might break a bone if you hit the water the wrong way. Way up there four feet ln the air you can feel the wind causing the board to sway and the water looks almost bl ack. Suddenly the crowd behind surges and the mornent of trijth is at hand. . . you have to jump. With plugged nase and closed eyes the child hurties earthward ta crash inta a bottomiess depth of cool water. [t seems 1like forever before the surface returns and then it'Is just a few spiashes ta the diving board. Who else but a child could laze away a whole summer afternoon and yet com- plain because the day was se short?
