It seems to be a safebet four of the Whitby entries could end up as league leaders which wouldbe quite an accompl ishment for an organization only in its fourth year of operation. Canadian Tire MIdgets The Canadian Tire Midget Club which put on such an outstanding performance in the recent tournament going to the f i n a I game at K insmen Stadium after four wins, has continued to play ex- ceptionally well picking up 2 wins this past week after dropping a thriller to Peterborough. In the Peterborough encounter the ga m e w a s a scoreless tie until the seventh inning when Peterborough got on the board following a WVhitby error and then came on with six more in the eighth for a 7-0 final. Harold Moore, on the mound for the Whitby club, had given up only one hit up to the fatal seventh when the tide turned, but as often happens when the other club picks up momentum they're hard to stop. In Oshawa on Thursday the Canadian Tire squad swept both ends of a doubl e- header from Oshawa on the strength of fine pitching by John Turner and Harold Moore who have been giving the club some outstanding performances of late in the drive to the league lead. In the opener Oshawa had run up a 6-0 lead by the end of the fourth, but Whitby came up with a big five-run rally in the top of the fifth and added another in the seventh to tie things up 6-6. Locals Brealk Tie In the top of the eighth, Canadian Tire went out in front 7-6 only to have Oshawa tie things up again 7-7 in their half of the inning. The Locals fought back, went out in front 8-7 and stayed there to pick up a hard fought and well deservedvictory. HaroldMoore picked up the win with another steady pitching c h o r e . In the nightcap the Canadian Tire club smothered Oshawa 8-1 behind some more great pi tching, this time by right-hander, John Turner, who shut out the opposition until the seventh. T h is weekend the Canadian Tire cl ub will be in the Leas ide Midge t Tour- nament which attracts some of the top clubs in Ontario, and by the way they have been going they should go a long way in this one. With a 14-7 record in regular league play the Canadian Tire club will end up asleague leader s which will give them the edge of home games when pl ay offs s tar t. Leg I onal res The Legionaires continued to roll along in the E. O. B. A. Pee-Wee ser ies adding four more victories to their re- cord in a busy week. They started off byhandling Port Hope easily defeating the easterners 22-2 in a lop-sided af- fair which was never in doubt. Dave McWhirterhandled thepitching du t i e s for the Legionaires and came through wi th a sparkl ing two hitter in which he struck out 14. Paul Brown Prepares w i th three singles, Dave McWhirter with a double and two singles, Blair Gibson, Mark MacDonald and Darren Vine eachhadapair of singles in lead- ing a 19-hit attack. P etryuh yn The Legionaires next met Oshawa Red Barn and came out on top 14-6 in agame where left-hander Fred Petry- shyn gave up 8 hits and struck out five to handle the Red Barn club effectively. In this one John Heffer wi th three sin- gles, Doug Shearer with two singles and a double, Darren Vine with a double and two singles, Mark Mac- .Donald andGreg Tushingham each w ith a pair led the hi tting. On Thursday they came up with what could prove to be their most important victory of the sea- son in a crucial contest in which they defeated their arch-rivals the Cobourg P i ra te s i n the ir own ball-yard C o b o u r g 1 s Donegan Park, 5-3. Vic- tory took the club a long way in help- ing to ensure a first place finish al- though the season isn't over yet, but this was a must game. The Pirates went out in front 1-0 and the score stayed that way for four innings when the Legionaires p icked up a pair to go in front 2-1 only to have Cobourg regain the lead 3-2 in the bot- tom of the fifth. The Legionaires an- sweredwithapairof runs in the sixth, and added another in the seventh for a 5-3 f i n a1f. Doug Shearer with two doubles and a single and John Heffer were the only Whitby hitters against the duo of Jim O'Rourke and AI David- son. Mark MacDonald star ted for the L e- gionaires and pitched three strong in- nings, but started to tire in the fourth and Cam Murkar came on in relief and picked up the victory. C.N.E. Tournament On Sat. the Legionaires finished up a busy four game week in Lindsay by defeating M o y n e s 12-4. Cam Murkar with two singles, John Heffer with a double, Darren Vine, Blair Gibson, & Tim Twining were the hitters. Cam Murkar on the mound got off to a shaky start in the first inning in which Lind- say went in front 3-0, but then settled down and was never in serious trouble from thereon as he gave up a lone run for the remainder of the game. Big news for the club was the word this week th a t they have been accepted in the Toronto Star C. N. E. Tournamentan invitation which no doubt was encour- agedby the club's fine showing in tak- ing the Championship honours in Ni- agara Falls three weeks ago. Lasco Steelera The schedule has been lean for the Lasco Steeler bantams who had only onegame, a 19-0 affair against Orono which featured some outstanding pitch- ing by Dave Allen who has been having abrilliantseasonwith the bantam club. In this one he struck out 19 batters, and and gave up only one hit. The Steelers have now comp le ted the regular schedule but have two rain-outs to make upwith Lindsay but should they not af- fect the standings its possible they may be dropped, and they have a make-up with Port Hope. The K of C tyke club is making a real run for top spot in their serTes and the only club with a chance of beating them out is Peter- borough, aMajor A club. The K of Cis defeated Port Hope 13-5 in Peel Park in a peculiar game in which they man- aged to turn only seven hits into 13 runs on the strength of walks and errors. MikeWelling, the winning pitcher aided his own cause with three singles to lead the club while Paul Heffer, John Wall, G a r y Shearer, & Ken Jimmo added safeties. The Whitby club went score- less until the third when they counted withfiveruns, and had another big in- ning in the sixth when they added six more. K. of C's On Sunday the K of C's travelled to Peterborough and came up with a big win in the liftlockcity defeating Peter- borough 9-7. They started right in to take charge and ran up an 8-1 lead and thennearlyblew it when Peterborough came through with six unanswered runs tomake it 8-7 before the K of C's added an i nsurance runfor the 9-7 final. Larry Chizen picked up the win with some pitching help from Mike Welling who came on in the fiifth to preserve the win. In their most impressive hitting display of the season the WX'hitby club got 12hitswith Paul Heffer leading the way wi th three. Butch Gal ley and Rob- bie Scero added a double and single each, Ken Jimmo had a pair while Steve Parrott, John Wall, LarryChizen, and Marty Cowl added singles.
