Their project encompasses a three or four phase cons t ru c tion period. Phase 1 would deal with construction of an arena which would be ready for use for the winter of 173. Later phases call for construction of an indoor swim- ming pool and possible tennis courts; a physical training centre and a possible auditorium depending on collective pri- ority wishes of the people of Whitby. The most pronounced aspect of con- struction plans is that the project (a) wouldconstructfacilities(arena, swim- ming pool etc.) at one site easily ac- cessible to all the town's people, and (b)would be totally built, endorsed and supported by the people of Whitby. The project would be similar to Aydelu Incorporated, t'he 1972 Arena Building Campaign undertaken by the communities of Aylmer, Deschenes and Lucerne in Quebec. According to i ts formula tor s the pro- posai will not be deterred by separate p I a n s by any group to erect an arena or c on s truct a swimming pool aiready afoot, as it is their firm belief that the facilities needed in the town would be better placed under one roof. The proposed sports recreati on cen- tre is not the Iroquois Park project and is not being promoted by any one poli- tician or political group. Nor has the recent plan been formul ated by the special arena committee. The project will be spearheaded by a w e I I known and respected group of W'Jhi tby ci tizens who have joined together with one aim in mind: to supply the people of W!hitby with a top calibre sports-rec- reation centre based on a proven formula.
