Your BoUlies Two groups in the VWhitby Area are organizing a Pilot project for the re- clamat ion and recyci ing of cans and bot- ties. Community Conscience, a lo- cal initiatives program in the WVhl1tby Area, and Littercheck Patrol, a group sponsored by the Metal Can Manufac- turers Advisory Council, have estab- I ished depotsvwhere citizens of the Csh- awa -Whitby Area can return their cans and bottles. These materi!alîs wi11 be taken to D-ot- tle and Can Manufacturers where they will be recycled. These depots enable the individual to become involved in a solution to one of our environmentaî probl ems. The de- Pots will be located at: Jan Koke's Sheil, Srock St. S. and AI Dearborn's Shel 1, HvvY. 2and Thick- son Road. Cans must be prepared in a special manner before they can be recycled. The foi lowing guidel mnes have been developed for preparing the cans for recyicling. These pointers shoul d be brought to the attention of the general public: 1 ) Cans should be dlean. Dirty cans mnake storage and handling more diff- cuit, andposeapossibîe health hazard. 2) Cans should have their paper la- bels removed. 3)Where possible, cans should have their ends removed. 4) Ail cans should be squashed and compacted. This makes for easier hand- HELP REDUCE LITTER AND SOUID WASTE a t~ ~ Iq~ I ing wvhen bringing the cans to the re- cyci ing centres, and easier handl ing and transportation between plant and scrap deal er. 5) Cans that have been previously in- cinerated areeli g i bî1e for recycl ing. However, once a can has been burned i t isdifficultto remove the ends as stipu- lated in paragraph 3 above. Customers should be encouraged to separate the cans before they are incinerated, tiot after. 6) Aerosoî cans present special problems and possible dangers.
