I>AGI-* 12, THIIURS)A Y, AIG LISTr 31, 1972, WIIITBY FREEIl RISS S tli1 Another Whien the pbrgise Triple Crown is used iii sport- ing circles, it generally refers ta the big three events on the thoraughibred racing circuit, but this week officiais of the Whitby Minor Basebaîl Assoc. are talking about a triple crown of another kind, the winning of three Eastern Ontario Basebaîl Cham- pionships by Whitby clubs in the 72 season. The K of C and Canadian Tire clubs hiad captured Tyke and Midget crawns previously and the Legionaires made it tbree titles for Whitby by winning out over Cobourg in a biard fought Pee-Wee series. ."A TENSE AFFAIR" The third and deciding game of the Pee-Wee finals was a tense affair going scoreless for the first three inniings. the Pirates mianaged a single run ini the top of fourth. and it was not until the bottomn of the fifth that the Legionaires brake baose with a four run outburst ta take the lead 4- 1. The Whitby club added a single run in the sixtb for a final score of 5-I. The gane.was brokenl up when Dave McWhiir- ter started a rally going with a perfect bunt. anc af hiis twa bits in the game. John Heffer showed signs lie is returning ta bis early season hitting form with a double and single tbat.played a big part in the vie- tory, while Blair Gibson added a pair of singles ta continue bis steady performance at the plate. Doug Shearer, Fred Petryshyn. and Ian Gillis added singles for a total of nine its off the Cobourg pitching duo of Jimn O'Rourke and AI Davidson. Cami Murkar picked up his nineteenth xin of the seasan. holding the Pirates ta two bits. while striking out nine. The young soLthpaw, who ordinarily relies on bis fast- baIl as bis "out" pitch, kept the Cobourg bitters off balance with a new pitcb bie and Coachi Ken Mac- Donald have been working on. LEGION AIRES LOSE CLOSE CAME In their opening gamne with Newmarket the Le- gionaires didn't fare as well as they dropped a close 2-1 decision in a gamne which was a hair raiser from the first pitch. The Legionaires picked up a anc run lead in the top of the first inning and this score stood through the next six innings as the two clubs could not dent the other's armaur. Fred Petryshyn the first Whitby batter got on with a single, the lone hit that Whitby got from Newmarket hurler Scott Rettie. The Legionaires had several good shots ta the outfield but tbey were hauled in by the Newmarket outfielders wha were in the right spot at the righit time. The gamne ended with a starybook finish, at least for Newrnarket supporters when the home club came up witb a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh and final winning ta win it. The big problem for the Legionaires was their inability ta get their bats gaing, because very few balîgames are won on only anc hît. Cam Murkar was on the mound for the Legionaires giving up tbree hits, and striking out ten. John Hleffer at third came throughi with the defensive play af the gamne as he engineered a rundawn play ta get an important out in the sixtb could have resulted in a run. Feelings ran quite high throughaut the contest as the large contingent of Whitby supporters an hand thought, and nat without reason, that the Legianaires were being "had" hy some unusual officiating. The visitors jumped into a 2-1 Iead in the first inning and it was nat until the bottom of the fourth that Whitby got on the board with a three run surge that put tbem in front 3-2. After two scoreless innings St. Thomas tied it up in the top of the seventh and final inning, but the K of C's were equal ta the task and in their haîf of the seventb Gary Shearer camne up witb a sharp single which drove in the winning run. The Whitby club displayed a lot'of desire and bustle and played well against the ST. Thomas club, and were nat ta be denied. Larry Chizen was on the miound for the K of Cs and came un) wîtb a standout pitcbing performance holding St. Thomas ta five bits.
