The articles are in pro- motion of the many service clubs and organizations in town, and will as well as give a brief history of the various clubs, internationally, include the current works being undertakenby them.01 Every Tuesday approximately sixty people'get together at the Whitby Curling Club for the purpose of trying to find ways to hielp out the Town of Whitby. Although not the same members, the club has been meeting since 1933 when the first Rotary Club of Whitby first received its charter fromn Rotary International and during that time the meeting place has only been in four different places. CHARTER NIGHT The Whitby club was sponsored by the Oshawa' Rotary and after the Charter Nighit was held in the Ontario Ladies College, the first president was Dr. G. Stevenson, Superintendent of the Ontario Hospital. Sitîce thiose early days the Rotary of Whitby lias done well in ail areas of service work in the town. The loor of the arena, the changehouse at the swinming pool and the Whitby Figure Skating Club are just a few of the Rotary's achievements in Whitby. President, Bihl rwin explained, "We contribute fuinds to the Rotary Club of Oshawa for the Crippled Kids Bus, and we regularly make contributions to needy situations such as Biaf*ra." The Whitby club also sends mioney to the Rotary International so thiat the Rotary Foundation can contribute funds, to undergraduate and post-grad- Late eduicational programis tor students ail over the world. The foundation sponsors excliange tours on an international level so thiat businessmen cani visit an overseas country to compare business rnethods and ideas. SUPPORT 0F CRIPPLED CHILDREN The Rotary have just fiinishied meeting their flnancial comnittmient to the J .O. Ruddy Hos- pital but Bill explained, "Our biggest annual payolit is in support of tie Ontario Society t'or Crippled Cildreni." Hall' of the mon01ey collected for the kids goes to the society for thieir hospitals, schools, and camips .tthroutghiout the province, and the other hialt' ik administered locally for such needs as braces, whleelcliairs, special shoes and miedical sup- plies. In an efflort to hielp a comipany thiat was on the verge of' bankruptcy during the early history of the Rotary, a mcm iber developedi a philosophy which was subseqtiently adopted by Rotary International which was the Four-Way Test: Is it the Truth? WiIl it be beneficial to ail concerned?9 The County Town Singers have also been part of the Revue and last year the Whitby Brass Band play- ed at the show. The Rotary have an upcoming draw called the Bermuda Draw, and the winners will get an all expense paid trip for two to Bermuda. The tic- kets wiil be $5 and there will only be 500 sold. HELP TO SENIOR CITIZENS During Senior Citîzens Week the Rotary spon- sored Bingo and a Bowling Party, and at Christ- Whitby Rotary Président, Bdil rwin looks forward to a lot of' intcresting projects betwecn now and thc end of his termn next July. mas they wilI hold their annual Christmas Dinner for senior citizens in town. In a further effort to assist the town 's senior citizens, the Rotary is working with the Ontario Housing Corporation to build low cost housing for them. Design and cost proposais are now being called for fromn builders for the project. Shortly the Rotary will be celebrating their 4Oth anniversary and Prêidenf-MWll Irwin promised it would be a 'gala affair'. Lloyd Gibson is the chairmnan in charge of the anniversary night' and it will be up to hlm to plan the varlous activities. BILL IRWIN Bihll rwin joined the Rotary tïve years ago in 1967 because, "It was an opportunity to get in- volved in service work in Whitby." He said, "I'd like to see the Rotary become a strong part of the group that is trying to get Whitby a new sports complex." This is an example of how Bill feels the Rotary can assist with service work in the town andi he felt the different service clubs could get together to provide the co-ordinating, force needed to establish the new sports facilities needed so badly in town at the present timne.
