Sixty-seven (65.7%) of the fatal accidents occurred on public roads. Another 20 ac- cidents occurred on lakes and rivers (15 of these accidents resulted in 24 drownings), and 13 accidents happened on private property, including eight on railway tracks. Sixty-nine fatal accidents took place at night while 24 occurred during daylight hours (the time of occurrence of nine accidents were un- known). Ninety-six out of the 116 fatalities were drivers, 1 7 were passengers and three were pedestrians. There were 102 maies and 14 femnales killed in snowmobiie accidents dur- ing the wiré 'f 1971-72. The 25-44 age group suffered the most fatalities with 52, followed b>' the 16-24 age group with 38 deaths. Eleven deaths (9.5%) were in the 0- 15 age group. Eighty people died in col- lisions wîth motor vehicles, trails, wires, fences and other objects. Fifty-six of these col- lisions were, with motor ve- hicles, while eight people were killed b>' trains while travelling on or alongside the tracks or while crossing them. This is up from two the previous winter. The operation of snow- mobiles on public roads is still the major hazard as 66 people wcre killed on the roads; 40 on secondar>' roads, 19 on municipal streets and seven on the highways. The Canada Safety Council encourages and supports Pro- vincial Govemmients and Mu- nicipalities in prohiibiting the ope ration of snowmiobiles on public roads. The statistics reveal littie change in the ove rail pictilre of' snownmobile t raged ies. Peo- ple are still heino killed by the careless and iliooightless use ofI Silîoiies. The place, as usual, is the C.N.E. Automotive Building, Toronto. Speed Sport '73 will have the usual conglomneration of Mag wheels, GMC Blowers, and exotie paint jobs. Oc- casionally designers like George Barris (Hollywood), Carl Casper (Michigan), and Mike Haas (California) surprise us by coming up with some original ideas on new machines. George Barris, a big name on the Show Car Circuit," started with a '73 Dodge van; and reworked the body quite uniquel>' (and extensivel>') to wind up with what he calîs "The Love Machine". Barris, also known as "the King of Kustornizers", modified the body of the van establishing a basic beltt une from which two vertical arches extend from the basic horizontal silhouette. Both arches contain four internai roll bars, and act as air spoilers at the top, for better high speed control. The front end uses Cibie rectangular headlights which are unfortunatel>' now being banned be- cause they are considered "too bright". Excepting the rear louvered window, ail others use Polaroid charcoal tinted glass. For easy entrance, the right side master door glass lifts, and the body section at that point iowers to reveal the plus interior. Probabi>' the ultimate in rolling luxury, this vehicle contains a six-foot Boudoir Sofa which revolves and is sur- rounded b>' a stereo system, a colour TV, a tape recorder, speakers galore, and even a light organ. Illumination is from a crystal chandelier mounted between two luxurious gold framed mirrors centred above the sofa with four background iights. The exterior colour is a combination of "hot .pink peari" blended into a magenta translucent applied in twenty-five coats of lacquer and hand-rubbed to a high mirror lustre. That, my friends, is why it is called "The Love Machine"! Mike Haas of Concord, Caifornia, took a fifty year old automobile, added a few modemn touches, and carne up with a very "Mod Rod". This roadster was originally a 1923 "T". A '71 Corvette back window section and deck were rnoulded in, the nose piece was hand made with fibre- glass, and the side panels are hand-formed aluminum. The front windshield w as chopped, as was the rad. ~ I PLUMSING DISCOVN' FXUES & SUPPLIES 701 Brock st. N.
