w~w i s i' i u One A young lady of my ac- quaintance told me this week slie was "feeling blue" be- cause her husband had just lef't on an extended business trip. That comment got me to thinking about how color, and ils implications, in fluence our daily lives and our inner- inost feelings. For instance; mention of the FREE PRESS to our mayor is often like waving a RED flag at a bull; soie of our couicillors wont believe the facts even when they're in BLACK and WHITE: our competition of- ten gels GREEN with envy wlien they sec the ad content of this newspaper; somie of our town departmnent heads view things througli ROSE colored glasses even ai the worst of limes and, wlen they are called on il, iley gel PURPLE with anger; and then there are those GREY areas within existing legisla- tion that mîakes our life just a little more difficult. Let's ail get behind the efforts of the men of Local 2036 of the Whitby Profes- sional Firefighters' Associa- tion in their attempt to send an even larger number of underprivileged children to the YMCA Day Camp this coming summer. With the co- operation of Bill Brant of the Brnck Theatre, they have or- ganized a filin festival, to take place March 21, with ail proceeds going to the fire- men's project. In addition, a door to door canvass will take place for this very wor- thy cause. * * * AVIS PUBLIC. Tlat is the heading on an advertisenment from the Caniadian Radio- Television Comimission ap- pearing in last week's issue of the FREE PRESS. Tlhe ad then continued withl its mes- sage entirely in Englislî. The Frenclh p h r a se ncans, of' man's view By Bill Williams course, Public Notice, and should not have appeared at all on copy intended for use hore. * * * Deputy-Reeve John Good- win, in a criticism directed at Mayor Des Newman, left little doubt in anyone's mind as to where he stands on "closed" meetings of council-especi- ally those that take place at midnight. Of course he'sright. His very apt comment that council "made many mis- takes last year" is a certainty and his follow up comment, "and nearly all of these mis- takes were made after mid- night," was right on. * * * The sale of a portion of the old arena site to the Liquor Control Board of On- tario for the establishment of a new retail outlet in our town seens to be a viable use for the site. LCBO properties are always well maintained and they are good corporate citizens. The price of the land olered to the Board seens reasonable to us. hi seens un- likely there will be a dispute on the part of the Board. We just hope cotmncil secs it tis wav. The local detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police is charged not only with the patrolling of the area high- ways but, in season, the pa- trolling of lakes and water- ways within the area. To this end, we understand the boat they use is being turned into a unit with an inboard-out- board notor of 115 horse- power capacity. This is a step ip from the outboard they fornierly used, rated at just 85 horsepower. Those speed- ers on the water better have second thoughts next year. It is going to take some kind of power plant to outruin our water-borne OPP men in the future. * * * Is there any merit to the suggestion of a truck by-pass route through our town? On any given day huge tractor trailer units ply both Dundas and Brock Streets to the detri- ment of traffic flow and the annoyance of ~ citizens and merchants alike. Other towns have beaten the problem why can't we? * * * Have you made your con- tribution to the Heart Fund yet? February was the month. of course, but anyone desiring to donate to this very worthy cause will not be turned down just because it is March. As one who has had to worry about a heart problem for some years I can tell you it is a good feeling to know that such an organization is doing its best in the continu- ing figlit against this prevalent disease. If you don't know just how prevalent heart trou- ble is in this country, just consider that one of every four persons who die in this country this year will be a victim of one kind of heart trouble or another.
