iHUR-al ,M RH2,17 Vol. 3, No. 13 F AM LVY R ESTAURAN1S WHITBY & 0SHAWA,ý By Jirn Qu-ail Shioppers who frequent (lhe glitter and tinsel aofithe plazas and shopping ceîîîers are missing the pleasures of' shlopping ini tle downtown areas such as in downtown Wh i tby. For instance, hiow miany tinies have you ever paused in your shopping ini a plaza ta watch a brighit red fire truck go roaring by on tlie way ta quell an impending disaster'? If you took the mecasuremients of a local shoppiri'g center and compared the size ta the area of downtown Wiîby you would discover there is very iîttle différence. Whiere but in Whitby could you take the kids f'or a tour of hie firehiaîl, stop in ai any one of at least a hiaîf dozen restaurants lfor lunch, and thien go on ta the library for a lit île book browsîing. The residents who live over the stores and shops in downtown Whitby have tlue advantage of sîinply leaving their cars sitting when they gel homne fromi work and walk- ing ta almiost any shop or entertainm-ent center they choose. As for the traveller hie will also find downtown Whiitby attractive in that he can get a motel suite downtown, park his car and walk ta a restaurant, go bowling or catch a show and then take another short walk for a little alcoliolic indulgence and further entertainnment. Even if lie is the world's worst atl getting his directions straight he can hardly get lost in his downtown travels. Despite tlhe cries of sanie thiat parking is limited down- town you can find a municipal parking lot in three different areas and aIl are within two blocks of what is still referred ta by niany as, "the four corners". Il almost makes one tend to tîink sarne are spoiîed because a two block jaunt for a parking space in Toronto is probably the shortest you'll ever find. Although the Bell Teleplione decided ta economize anîd move out of Whitby you can still pay your fuel bill, hydro bill and tax bill downtown and if you still have mioney left over a *nice bouquet of flowers for the lit tIc wornan mighit just hit the spot. A Friday night iîeal in a local restaurant after cashing the paychwque isahlmost a ritual for some farniies. They file in just around six o'clock and with suppreessed excite- nment eye the menu for their once a week treat. Downtown doesn't discrîiminate against sex or age. White the kids are in onel of the local barbers getting a mnuch protested trimi, ded is browsing through the list of imported wines ai the LC.B3.O. and niother is ai the hiair- dressers getting a new creation. If you like gaudy glitter, iinpersonal service and box type structures the plazas are the place for you. In down- town Wiîby you'll fiîîd personal custorner service with clerks who do tîTeir best to find you jusi the righit goods. White the downtown buildings are far froin new and can't boast the artificial glamour of the shiopping centres they do have a lot of history and character. Mien you walk into thie ibrary and hcar thle creak of floorboards y0LI somechow feel the reverence of being-in a library amnidst books of' learning and knowledge. If, by somne chance, you retura 10 your car to find it won't shiart you will have no more than a three block walk ta a service station ta seek assistance. Wheni the nmechanic gives you the estimate and you feel 1t's limie to trade in the old clunker you have mierely ta walk downtown ta buy a new car and arrange the necessary fin ancing. You cah even buy the licence plates for dm1t car dowiiîown! White you're getting the plates you can browse through exotic booklets and folders describing exciting vacation spots A over the world and the mnetliod of getting there is îs also up ta you with prices and timetables available. If you'd rather do your escapig hrough the medium of television you can, in the same downtown block, buy a new set and arrange for cable ta ensure good reception. Downtown Whitby hasn't changed 100 much since 'the acconipafyiiig photographis were taken. Sadly, the post office is gone but the new ane is only two blocks away, still downtown. The old town hall and police department are gone but they rnoved inta new premises only four blocks away. Young and aid alike frequent the downtowni area for différent reasonis thial ofteîî take on~ the appeartince of being' Ille sanie. On hot sumîner doys the youths lounge around the front porch of the library while only a block away the senior citizens rest on a benchi and watch the strearn of traffic and humanity. And on most Saturdays you can stili see the tykes Iinied L1p ai the theatre waiting ta îhrill ta the adventures of their favou rite hiero. Even after closing hours the sidewalks are spotted with, people who enjoy the simple pleasures of gazing in the shop windows in search of a bargain. And bargains can often be found because the refis downtown are flot nearly as exorbitant as those in the miails or plazas. Homne baked goods really are, downtown, and many evenings the Iighîts burn late in the back of a bakery as tasty goods are prepared and baked for sale the next day. Personal attention is high on the Iist of assets for the downtown area and frequent shoppers in the area are greeted by storekeepers with a friendly hello and conversa- Gontinued on Page 3 INSIDE THIS WEEK PAGE 5 MOTORING.................... .. .PAGE 6 CANADA PERMANENT TRUST PAGE 8 PAGE 10, PAGE 13 BURGESS GIRL 0F THE WEEK BIRD'S EYE VIEW...............
