Donohue, probably the world'"s most versatile racing driver -engineer, will debut the new car at Friday's first practice and quaiifying session. The turbocharged Por- sche is an advanced design, based on the car Donohue helped develop iast year and which, in the hands of George Foîlmer, easily won the Can-Am titie. In secret tests this spring, the new car, which is longer and slightly wider and sports a pair of large stabilizing f ins, bas been considerably faster on the st- raights than Donohue's previous car. But the true capabilities will ot be known until it is actually tested under race conditions at Mosport. Many feel it will prove to be the fastest road racing machine in the worid. Donohue, who perfected the turbocharger for use on road racing cars, will have over I1,200 horsepower to cali on at Mosport. Donohue, as always unassuming, doesn't go along with everyone predicting that the new Porsche 917-10s will blast everything else off the track. He is inclined to believe the Porsche 91 7-10s he and Foilmer drove last year will have an edge in the early races because they are proven designs and, he adds, "they are damn good cars." Racing the cars and preparing them to race is Dono hix's whole life. He almost lives at the Roger Penske Racing Headquarters in Newtown Squarç, P.A., averaging about 13 hours a day in the garage when he isn't racing or testing. The 1972 Indy 500 winner bas a Bachelor of Science degree fromn Brown University where, in 1959, he majored in the then-new study of pollution control. At 36, he has trouble counting ail the major races and championships he has won. He led from the start and had left the Team McLaren cars of Denny Hulme and Peter Revson far back when a sticky valve on a turbocharger forced him to make a lengthy pit stop. He returned to the race three laps behind and, even then, almost cauglht eventual winner Hulme. This year, you eau bet Donohue will make sure al the turbocharger valves are weil-oiled.
