r PAGE 8, THURSDAY , JUNE 141,1973, WHITBYý FREE PRESS KALNINS ON THEATRE MANAGERS Photographers beware of artists! And, beware of those ivory-tower managers who run our art institutions! iust do what they tell you. Don't talk back. Be humble at ail times. Then, you might have a better chance of getting pictures for your publication. 1 learned this recently while being dispatched to take photos of a student ballet performance at the St. Law- rence Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto. As 1 arrived there, with cameras dangling ini front of me, I was quickly intercepted at the door by an usherette. "You can't bring the cameras bere," she said. "Don't you know the rules?" 1 was qiuick to admit that 1 didn't know the house rules, but 1 was asked to take pictures for the Toronto Sun. "Weil, you better sec the manager about this," she said disgustingly and left me stranded in the lobby. 1 waited there for about twenty minutes. Finally, the manager came. He was, to say the least, slightly surprised seeing me with ail those cameras arounld my neck. DR. But, as 1 suspected, it was ton good to last. *Out of the darkness, a unifornied usherette dashcd towards nie. StilI catching a breatlî, slîe launched an ail- out verbal attack on me. "You idiot, you cannot stand there, You aire rdining the performance,"' she told me, flushing with anger. "You must report to tic manager riglît now." Much to lier chagrin, 1 told bier to get out of ny way whulc l'u takiuîg pictures. The first act of the draina "Photographer versus Usherette" was over. he second act was slowly nnfolding i n the theatre's front lobby. The manager, needless to say, was angry by now and so was bis assistant and, of course, ail bis entourage. The verbal duelling begun. Said the manager: "You broke our agreement." Said 1: "What agreement?" By a minute, we got deeper and deeper into arguments. I defended my photographic rîglits, hee bis own managerial riglits. So we clashed. Head On. At the end of the fracas, bis pride was really hurt when 1 made a casual remark that 1 was covering onîy a "student performance" and not a gala event of Moscows Bolsboi Ballet. Sucli a remark, I sensed, lie didn't expect to licar from a photographer. After ail, photographers, according to some theatre mana- gers, are nothing more than uneducated clods roaming the streets and cultural palaces aimlessly. This photogra- plier, however, provided some food for thought, unexpec- tedly. Prîde, as one mîght say, is a hard thing to swallow. Tbey could stand îosing Mary Tyler Moore and the Tommy H-unter Show but we seemn to have committed the ultimate sin in eliminating Gordon Sinclair from'the air."' Al right, let's stop there. 0f course, I'm not seriously suggesting that the world would come to a stop if advertising were to be elimi- nated. What I bave tried to illustrate is that adver- tising is a working part of our economic ecol- ogy. Sure, some advertising is silly. Some of it is irritating., Maybe there are too many com- mercials at every break. But most advertising is efficient and informative. [it serves the pur- pose of stimulating competition, of keeping things moving. [t does help to generate sales, work and jobs in many service and product categories. [t creates an atmosphere of excite- ment. During the Second World War, the New Yorker pnblisbed a special issue for soldiers. [t contained no advertising. The soldiers com- plained that it just wasn't the same withont the ad s. The world wîth advertising sometimes is aggravating. I arn constantly told that advertising creates unnecessary desires and wants. Weil, what's unnecessary? The man who prints the deter- gent packages needs bis wage just as much as anybody cisëc. I challenge anyone to show me and prove to me that a particular product or service has been forced on him or lier personal- ly - by advertising - more than once. Maybe you can fool the consumer once - not twice. If the product tastes lousy, or doesn't live up to its promise ail the brilliant advertising in the world won't persuade a consumer to buy it again. Do we really need ail those cars and frozen foods and skis and fisbing rods and golf clubs and whiskies and no-press shirts, disc brakes, stainproof rugs and feit pens? Weren't wc better off when things were sim- pler and when we washed with Fels Naptha and doctors made bouse cails? Continued next week uoreski s Summer Resort Ltd.
