PAGE 10, THURSDAY, JULY 19, 1973, WHITBV FREE PRESS KALNINS UN EUROPE Amsterdam, Holland No visît to this city is compiete without sampling the night life af ter midnight, preferably, or spending some time in the museums or concert halls. But, above ail, one must set an evening aside for a make - believe trip to the famous red light district, just a stone's throw fromn Dam Squaâre. I have seen sin strips ail over the worid - New York's 8th Avenue, London's Soho, Tokyo's Asaksa and Harnburg's infamous Rehpcrbahn, but this one in Amsterdam beats them ail, it is, perhaps, the most tQlked about red light district at the present timne. The public interest is quite understandable. Where else can you sec so many sex shops, porno theatres and mobie houses, aIl crammed into four short blocks, divided by littie bridges and canais, right opposite is a beautiful old church. The red light district' is very, very colourful. 1 must say. First the sex shops, filled with pornographie materials. The business is brisk at this time of the year, one shop owncr told, me. His customers are mostly tourists from the U.S. and Canada. They buy books anid sex items for a relatively high price. Thcse shops aiso offer. pornogâphic movies and live sex shows. The 'in' thing is to attend a live porno performance which wili cost you about 25 guilders. Just being curious, like most of the visitors to the area, I witnessed one such show. Phew! It was quite a sizzler. No imitation. No fooling around. It was the REAL thing! Dutch people believe that pornography is not hurting anybody. They treat it as a form of entertainment. The same applies to iower - key sex shows, porno movies and nude stage presentations. Dutch people, I aiso learned, fully endorse Iegaiized prostitution. The liberal attitude is well reflected in the red district where hundreds of prostitutes solicit prospective customers. Some sit in the windows and dispiay themselves. Others stand on HIR the streets or lean against lamp posts. At times, one Street mnight start to look like a bread Iine.- ail hungry for customners. Many of the girls are very young, l'd say about seventeen or eighteen years of age. One thing, though, is cerli: everyone enjoys the sex filied surroundings. Thiere are times when crowds wiIl push you off the street. Especially when the area attracts many visitors (and very few custorners) shortly before midnight. One evening 1 decided to watchi some of the people who came to Amsterdam's sin palaces. -They scemed to represent every corner of the globe. i heard at least ten different languages spoken on the streets. And both sexes were on hand. 1 saw hordes of women going into sex shops or' attending a live porno show. The explanation for this seemed to be always the same: This you may flot sec in North Amerîca for years to corne. While in Amsterdam, you must visit also some of the cultural palaces:' 1 was fortunate to catch a ballet perfor- mance and hear soprano Joan Sutherland. Both performan- ces were sold out. As a one - time music student, 1 enjoyed the bel canto artistry of the Australian - born soprano and the well polished ballet performance by the local dance company. This is the time of the year when the Holland Festival attracts tliousands of art loyers from many parts of the world. They are in for some outstanding performances by the Dutch artists with some international artists making their usual guest appearances. i can also highly recommend a visit to a concert by the farnous Concertgebow Orchestra. It is a musical event you wouldn't like to miss for anything. To my cars, the orchestra sounded as good as any of the top North American orchestras. Too bad we don't hear great music and great musicians more often in Canada. Perhaps, a cultural exchange would be the right answer. Let's hope so.
