-PAGE 2, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1973, WHITBY FREE PRESS O'N DIRTY POLITIOS It bas been brouglit to the attention of the Free Press that since our, Editorial last week on election apathy, and possibly BECAUSE of it, some candidates are suffering a guiît complex and are trying to get around *the truth by 'mudslinging.' The rumour being spread is that the Free Press is 'backing' certain candidates. Not True! But these political 'back - stabbers' say "look at aIl the coverage being given some candidates, while others get none." Which is true. But ask yourselves 'why?' As we pointed out in the Free Press Editorial of Iast week, some political candidates care enough to go to the trouble of submitting their views to the Free Press NOTHINO IS FREE It's true, you really can't get anything free these days. Take the case of a local musician, Walter Young. Walt went to the local Cablecast 6 studio with tbe idea in mmnd that lie would Mie to do a musical program. The studio liked bis music and sound and rather than do one program it was suggested that Waît could do at least a monthly programn with a mixed bag of quiet poetry and soft music. When Walt first entered the studio lie was toîd that aithougli Cablecast 6 would like to, they do not have the budget to pay money for performers whether they lie professional or amateur. Contrary to some opinions nobocy is driving Cadillacs in the cable business Iocally because the cost of installing such a service is tremendously higli. Watt agreed that no money could be paid and this did not matter to him, lie merely wanted to get local exposure and by doing a local program he could also provide a service to the community. POLICE REPORT Lst Wednesday morning, (3:25 a.m.), Whitby Const- able AI I-kwe was making a routine check of the Thunder- bird Golf and Country Club in Ashburn when he noticed movement inside the building. Constable Fkiwe summoned help and found two people inside. Charged with break and enter with intent are: Richard D. McBeth (17) and Michel Cyrille LeCîerc (1 8) both of 5101 Brock Road N., Claremont. Thursday morning, a 'smash and grali' artist made away with a camera valued at $25. from the display window of Courtice - Aliiin drug store on Brock St. N. Also last Thursday, another counterfeit $50. bill turned up in Whitby. Police say that these counterfeit fifties are so good that even the serial numbers are different. Farmers in the fourth concession area are reporting an outbreak of sheep slayings by dogs. The last time Ed'itor-la 1 .Om Larry Voyde, Acting 1resdent of the WhitDy Jaycees presented a trophy and a cheque for, $50. to the Vice - President of the Malta Social Club, Claude Scbembri, honouring the club for their participation in the annual County T own Carnival Parae. Scretari oe Puiettil and John Bonello look on. for public inspection, which we have re - printed un - edited whule other candidates, aithougli baving the same opportunity apparently couldn't be botliered (or could care less). It is like the old saying, 'You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.' The Free Press can only offer it's services, we can't MAKE people contribute. As of this issue, the Free Press bas printed EVERY- THING that has'been submitted by political candidates. The candidates whose views appear ini tbis issue and the past issues are the candidates who obviously care enoughi about YOU (Our readers - the voters) to put in a littie extra effort to be deserving of your vote. If your favourite candidate's views have flot appeared in the Free Press it's because lie or she bas not submitted anything to 'the voice of the County Town.' Ask yourself 'Why?' Now cornes the something for nothing. Watt had to phone to Toronto to get permission from the Toronto Musicians local union. The union rules state that when a performer wants to play for nothing or less than union scale he must obtain permission. - Not only was he flatly refused the permission but when the Cablecast programn director carne on the phone to explain, the union man accused the Cablecast director of listening in on the pbone. The union representative not only flatly refused to give permission but onlu grudgingly admitted that Watt could go over lis bead to a higher authority. Even after explanation as to what Walt wanted to do on a local' cable station and a strict budget tbat would not allow for the paying of performers there was only a refusai that was almost in rude terms. Not many people can logically argue that unions aren't necessary but wben the rules are so* strict that a musician can't play for nothing while providing his home town with a service most people would enjoy then something is really rotten and it sure isn't in Denmark. No matter how appealing it may look. it's true, you reaîly can't get something for nothing. an outbreak such as this occurred was about a year ago. Last Sunday, Gordon D. Grover, 102 Front Street, Whitby, returned home to find that his home had been broken into and a coin collection hiad beeti stolen. Also Iast Sunday, Anderson VCI was broken into and a quantity of electronic e(luipmeIlt srnashed. The value of this equipment had flot been determined at time of writing.
