WHITBY FR EE PRESS, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1973, PAGE 7 KALNINS ON Toronto DaIly Star CFRB newscaster - commentator Gordon Sinclair recent- ly took to the air waves to deliver a stinging attack on Toronto Star's editorial policies. Basically, Sinclair, who bas worked for this newspaper for many years, told his mid - day radio audience that the Star bas become so bland that even movie reviews by Clyde Gilmour are relatively mild in tone as compared to fellow critics views expressed in the local media. Further, the old Sinc complained that the Toronto Star is not doing a good job in covering local news events. Ail in ail, veteran newsman Sinclair made it clear that things are not what they used to be. And, 1 could not agree more with what he bad to say. A further blow to the Star's not - to - brigbt news image came recently from Robert Reguly, the prize - winning reporter who has resigned from his prestigious foreign ocrrespondent's post to join the CTV network. While announcing his resigînation, Reguly also spilled a few beans about working conditions at the Star. He told the Globe and Mail reporter that lie had muade a naine as an investigative reporter, but the Star 'refused to uise some of mny investigative work,' Then, Reguly went on to say "'m riot clear what the Star regards as investigative, and 'm îilot sure they really want investigative reporting. 1 think the paper has become blander. The general atmosphere is like a super - efficient factory. But the paper has treated me decently, and it is certainly the most lavishi spending paper in Canada." As one who has done a lot of work for the almighty Star, 1 wholeheartedly agree with Reguly's contention that the Star has become a blander newspaper. But, 1 sornewhat disagree with Bob's statement about the 'lavish' spending. Sure enough, the Star has plenty of money to spend, but in my case they have been penny - pinching ail the way.. Not long ago 1 claimed S25. for some exclusive picture 1 had taken of an explosion iin Scarborough, but the filthy - rich Star sent me only fifteen dollars - contrary to the gentleman's agreement. Would you caîl this O Ministry of Government Services lavish spending? Mind you, I'm îlot complaining. 1 brought out these figures, just to prove that Reguly is îîot so well informed - at least in the financial department. However, the former Starman is dead - on about Star 's blandness. Over the recent months, 1 have seen the other Toronto newspapers providing a stiff competition for the Honde - rich Empire, (of course, the Star will neyer admit it publicily or otherwise.) Politically, the once gray - and - old Globe and Mail bas 'beated' the. Star on numerous occasions. AIl the biggest Queens Park stories have been featured by the morning paper, wbile the Star bas been wondering how to handle these political bot cakes. And, picture wise, The Toronto Sun has out - paced the Star by an englisb mile. A sad case in point was the recent shooting of a gunman by a Metro police by Alyson Hutchinson * Editor's Note: Miss Hutchinson, a twenty - year' old type - setter at the Free Press, feit strongly enough about the upcoming election to voice her views and possibly the views of the younger generation in Whitby. Ah, election time is upon us, once again. The candidates have pasted on their smiles, hammered up their campaign signs, shook a lot of hands,' and kissed some babies. The voters are left with their lieads spinning, caught up in the political whirlwind. lt's time to think of which candidate is worthy of our vote, of which candidate is in it for himself, or which candidate is ini it for us'? But then, you stop and think again ... those in charge put ini power whoever they please. 1 think the word they use is acclamation. With the municipalities going to regional control, we need sorneone who caîî handie the responsibilities of acting as a go - between. The individuals we vote into the region cannot have any conflicts between themselves. No personal gains and no struggle for political powers with each other. They will both have to work together to take the voice of our town into Regional Council. No split personalities because they wiIl have to be responsible to- each other before they caîl be responsible to the mutltitudes. We will have f0 choose with discretion. Conficting personalities are great on local Councils. Every Monday night, they get together and yell and ATTENTIONJ WHY PAY Mr. STEREO Specialists in Stereo Sound *Equ ipment Alilworh guaranteed Cstllo Hopkins St. & Dundas Street Whitby 725 -3772 ,,W. service wlîar v. seiI FARtMERSilI MORE? While the Sun was featuring the dead man - almost in Cinemascope - the Star was trailing far behind with an insignificant street shot. To make things worse, the Sun had two experienced men covering thîe shiooting incident, the Star hiad four people scrounging the area. Needless to say, 1 could go on sbowing many instances where Starmen have done a poor job of covering local news stories. No small wonder, that radio and television reporters are starting to look better every time there is a big news story to be covered. Finally, I would like to make this point: newspapers in Canada should stop the personality cuIt and concentrate more on craftsmansbip and quality. Tbey have a great time, and on top of that, tbey get paid for it too. After Monday, whatever they do won't 'be of mucb importance anyway. Seriously though, one can't help but wonder wbat is going to happen. You sit down and look around and say to yourself "Whitby sure isn't the same old town that it used to be. Wby, it used to be a joy to live in this place. Why have we allowed it to progress so far?" In ten years, (1984 is dloser than you think), we'll turn to each other and say "I'm afraid to breatbe anything 1 can't see." Then, we'll turn around and complain because we're getting rumbled out of our beds in the morning by the roaring blasts of Boeing 747's. Tbink again. Who is allowing a buge international airport to be built less than ten miles away. If you tbink for one minute that Whitby won't be affected by a complex sucb as this, you're only fooling yourselves. Claremont, Greenwood, Pickeriýae Brougham residents are bitterly opposing it, and 'we won't lift a finger to help tbeir figbt. Why not? Those in power constantly tell us, progress is marvelous, how can you flot imagine life in this concrete jungle we have created for ourselves? You laugh at our generation now. AIl us long - haired, peace - loving, guitar - playîng hippie freaks. This is tbe generation that is "going back to the land" (if theres going to be any left.) In 20 years or so, when we are ,.û power, running this country, I can tell you now that life styles will be mucb more enriched and rewarding.
