r PAGE 8, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1973, WHITBY FREE PRESS KALNINS ON The Brunswick House For years I have been planning my trip to Brunswick House on Bloor Street West in Toronto, but somehow I neyer had the time or guts to be part of this great institution, immortalized lately by the Toronto Sun columnist Paul Rimstead. When Paul lived in Pickering Township, he'd say: "Alex, damn it, you have to corne to Brunswick House for a drink. And, besides, I'm appearing nightly on the drums." While the old Rimmer hiniseif was busy beating the drums, I always found myself elsewhere, either taking pictures or chasing ambul- ances, mostly on weekends. This was, of course, considered a prime tirne on rny part, and I couidn't tear myself away, even for a single shot of rum. But, finally (folks, cheer up!) 1 made it, though minus Rimstead and his gang. At the invitation of Mrs. Nightingale, I chose a Sturday night and took along my dear tatvian friend, Mara Priedkalns. Mara, a honey - blonde Iab technician at the Toronto General Hospital, was at first somewhat reluctant to join me for a drink at this unique Toronto Watering hole. But, the Ms. later agreed to corne along just for fun' as she put it. Fun it was, alright. As a matter of fact, more fun than I could take in one shot. We spent almost three hours there, eating chieken and drinking draft beer. It was ail on the house, thanks to Mrs. Nightingale. Brunswick House - apart from drinking - 1 learned, thrives on entertainrnent - ail free of charge. You might have heard about their Talent Nights. And, what talent! If you can sing off - key and still maintain a proper physical balance, you could earn yourself a star billing during the entertainment part of the program. The Brunswick House 'entertainment poicy' is that anyone with a pair of legs and the voice of a gravel pit, can just step right up and start betting out his favourite ditty. Everything is permitted during an impromptu performance except molesting the audience. Should the self - appointed artist feel like dancing, he or she can go ahead with bis own version of Cabaret. During my brief BH stopover, I witnessed a number of unrehearsed performances starting from tap and ballet and finishing witli a high C from the great Caruso. And somewhere . from nowhere - came this character 'Charlie Brown' who also wanted to sing. But, he had one big problem, he had forgotten his voice at the 'Brown Derby.' Nevertheless, he stumbled onto the stage, waved at the misty - eyed audience, mumbled a few words and said he was going to sing. But that was the end of bis short - lived musical career - he feil off the stage. Applause and plenty of laughter accompanied Charlie's demise. It was time for the old pros to recapture the stage with 'When The Saints Corne Marching In.' When the evening was over, 1 leaned over to my friend for comments. "Gee whiz," she gasped. "I didn't know Toronto had a place like this." Neither did 1. FRIENDLY FLEA MARKET Oshaws 725 -9783 We strip and refinish pianos. I Furniture re - !2postced prMp*nally.
