r-. SPAGE 2, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1973, WHITBY FREE PRESS La,.st Saturday the Whitby Fire Department had a general eail to the Ladies College at the end of Gilbert Street. There was a tire on the third floor in one of the girl's rooms. For those of yuu who have just moved into town, the Ladies College used to be a castie and it is one of Whitby's most historie buildings and a lot of people in town would flot like to see the building burned to the ground. We're not sure if the council cares or not. Frum inform- ation received from what we consider a reliable source it was Iearned at the site of the fire Saturday that the Fire Department bas asked the town council tbree times to put a fire hydrant dloser to the Ladies College and stili nothing bas been dune about the dangerous situation. The Fire Department needs a bydrant at the corner of Gilbert and Reynolds Streets to protect both the Ladies Clare Hewson 4th. kinsmen life member Clare Hewson, 109 Cen- tre St., Whitby, became the fourtb Ufe Member of tbe Witby Kinsmen Club last Friday night. Thiey still don't bave their fire hydrant and we wonder how much longer council will go on playing games. Our Fire Department bas one of the best records in Canada su when tbey ask for equipment you would think tbe council would listen but in this instance they didn't. Saturday's fire could have been a disaster but it wasn't. But, by baving tu figit a fire su far away from the nearest hydrant the department used almost every hose available from ail Whitby stations. Hoses had to be run for 300 feet and that tied up ail the buse at une fire. Wbat if there had been another serious fire elsewhere at the same time?? Our Fire Department bas proven them- selves and their new ladder truck now it's time for the council to back them up.
