Words f rom West Lynde by Norm Mealing Tfiis column is the first of wliat I hope will be a regular feature in each issue of the Whitby Erce Press, I personally feel that we who live in West Lynde have sornething to offer the Free Press, and I know that the Free Press has a great deal to offer the residents of our subdivision so, for what it's worth, here goes columnn one on the events, both past and future, in the new Whitby Community known as West Lynde. COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION ELECTIONS: On Thursday March 28th, over 100 memrbers of the West Lynde Commn- unity Association turned out at Henry Street Highi to elect the Association's first Executive. The turnout, which comprised approximately one-fourth of the Association's totak'membership, was not disappointed because there were spirited contests for four of the -fîve executive positions. Good In the race for President, Irian Evoy won over Bill Hoffràan by a margin of twelve votes. Both Brian and Bill had served on the Association Steering Committee wliich developed the W.L.C.A. froni scratch, Brian as Interini President and Bill as Cliairinan of the group which drafted the Constitution and By-laws. In their speeches to the assernbly and in the question period which followed, both candîdates -spoke of the need for additional recreational facilities for our Community, and the need for close co-operation with Whitby Counci. Kevin French narrowly defeated Dan Pelletier in the election for Vice-President. Both candidates presented themselves well, and, in the words of two or three Association mernbers, "it was too bad they both couldn't have been elected". Certainly, it was my feeling that these two chaps both are a great asset to the Association. The election for Treasurer was a three-way affair with John Bates defeating Margaret Cox and Donna Martin. As in aIl the other races, it was hard to choose a best person for the job. John, however, had worked long and hard on Steering Cornmittee, and this experience stood him in good WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10, 1974, PAGE 11 Margaret Joyce Was acclaimed as Secretary. It was the only acclamation "of the night, and was very popular with the crowd. In tlianking the people, Margaret pledged to do her best in what evcryone realizes is the most difficuit of ail the executive positions. The Constitution calis for the WL.C.A. to have four Directors and six candidates offered themnselves for the post, Jack McMillan and Dan Pelletier were elected to two year terms with Heather Crornien and Bill Hoffmnan e lected to serve one year. Ail four candidates spoke of the need for the Association to serve ail the Community. With the election over, the new Executive must now move to strengthen the work done by the Steering Committee. A great debt of gratitude is owed those members of the Steering Committee who have brought the Association this far, and so we acknowledge Brian Evoy, Bill Hoffman, Jack McMillan, Graham McDonald, Kevin French, Bruce Lennie, Val Read, Ann Bourke, Heather Crornien and John Bates. Companiords Get Grant of $4,350 The Honourable J.H. Faul- kner, Secretary of State, is pleased to announce the app- royal of a grant under the New Horizons Program, on behaif of the Minister of National Health and Welfare. A grant in the amount of $4,3 50 will go to The Good Companions Club No. 569 of Whitby, Ontario, which has requested a grant to organize recreational activities and entertainment programs for seniors. By means of film presentations, carpet bowling and a variety of musical pro- ductions, this group hopes to encourage the participation and interaction both of the residents of Fairvîew Lodge Hoýne for the Aged and seniors' groups throughout the community. This project, entitled "En- tertaining the Good Comp- anions", will involve 150 people, and is under the spon- sorship of The Good Comp- anions Club No. 569.
