I hadn't realized just how much cars have become a major part of our lives until I started paying particular attention to the car commercials recently: I can remember Oldsmobile using an old song, "My Merry Oldsmobile" for their commercials, but isn't it marvellous how the ad people always portray a completely different scene than you might experience as the owner of an Oldsmobile. I own.an Oldsmobile but I can't remember many days when I felt like singing "In My Merry Oldsmobile" as h drove along. Actually I may write a song called, "If I have to spend another nickel on it I'm going to blow it to smithereens" - blues. . In the past few years the auto makers have changed their commercials somewhat in that they now admit you do occasionally drive your car in the rain and naybe even in the snow. Volvo must have been thinking of past commercials when they came up with their newest ads that talk about driving "out there in the real world". It is quite a refresh- ing change from their last commercials when they showed 8 Volvos stacked one on top of another. I knew the downtown parking lots were getting crowded but it lhad never occurred to me that the lots would resort to stacking. Obviously Volvo got in on - if you'll pardon - the ground floor with that information so they started building cars that were suitable for stacking. Isn't it marvellous how the auto makers rally to the cause. Chevrolet had some famous conmercials but the best had to be the one with the car perched atop a huge chim- ney rock in the middle of the Grand Canyon somewhere. They too must know something of the tight parking situa- Explore the Underwater World of Scuba Don't miss this chance to sign up for comprehensive training and certification as a Qualified Scuba Diver. 6 week course At - SIMCOE HALL BOY'S CLUB (EASTVIEW) 433 Eulalie Street, Oshawa STARTING - SUNDAY, MAY19 Sunday mornings from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. COST - $70. It's funny but in the commercial they talked about how great a car Chevrolet was but they never said just exactly how the lovely lady standing with it managed to get it parked on top of that rock. What they also didn't tell you is that while the commercial was being shot there was a niechanic hiding under the car and that just after they shot the commercial the helicopter broke down. As it turned out the lovely lady whose silken hair was blowing in the breeze had to spend the entire night with no food or water on top of that rock with the car and the mechanic. Now doesn't that sound like fun?? . Fiat are into comnercials in a big way. While they don't show a housewife driving they do show the car doing some rather spectacular things. One scene shows a Fiat roaring from the top of one building to the roof of another. h can only assume that on his way to Beckers for a quart of milk the driver found the traffic so bad he decided to take to the rooftops. Another scene shows the same, game little Fiat tearing off the dock and flying through the air to land on the deck of a departing car ferry. This could start a trend that will certainly be popular with alil ferry captains l'rn sure. Volkswagen has a commercial out now in which the little car is hoisted up by its front bumper and the entire REPORT Fourteen motor vehicle collisions were investigated by officers from Whitby Detachrnent this past week.. There were 2 persons injured and damage was estimated at S9,400.00. Motorists are reninded to use extra caution now that weekend traffic lias increased with people heading for the cottage. Allow extra time to get to your destina- tion and extra space between vehicles as most accidents on weekends on Highvay 401 are rear and collisions. RADAR WARNING Motorists are advised that radar is being operated in the Construction Zone fron Church Street to the Rouge River Bridge. The posted speed limit is 45 m.p.h. and is strictly enforced. There is an increase in work being done here and construction vehicles are crossing the nedian at various points. Observe the speed limit and promote safe driving. One break and enter, one theft, 3 trespassing corn- plaints were reported during the week of April 28 to May 4. - Six driving complaints were investigated, 6 abandoned autos checked and 7 motorists were given assistance. Three impaired drivers were arrested and 7 liquor seizures made. CPIC checks resulted in 13 people being arrested for other police departments. On 20 occasions calls were received at Whitby Detachment that pertained to other police areas and the information was forwarded to the proper author- ity. Thirty-three other calls of miscellaneous nature were recorded and acted upon. Impressive?? l'Il say the last time you saw After the great belly revelation the announcer cuts.the rope holding up the bug and then he drives it into the river. Amazingly the car floats. I think that's a terrific feature. In fact I think Volkswagen and Fiat should get together. By combining the best of both you could have a car with a nice looking belly to show as you drove it across the roof tops and when you came to the docks and made a last ditch effort to catch the ferry you wouldn't have to think about what would happen if you missed be- cause you could just float to shore and drive off to some more roof tops while waiting for the next ferry. One of these days some radical will make a commercial showing a car in 401 traffic on a holiday weekend or in the middle of the Don Valley Parkway about 5:30 p.m. on a weekday. They might even show that same car getting backed into at a parking lot and stuffed full of packages and kids with ice cream cones on a hot summer day. Even if a radical film maker did show such things in a commercial we wouldn't watch it because we all know these things could never happen anyway ..... do they?? stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on Highway 401 and a check of the vehicle revealed a quantity of marijuana, which was turned over to Durham Regional Police for their action. Canada's No. 1 Killer Is Heart Disease Says Whitby Lawyer At a recent meeting of the Whitby chapter of the Ontario Heart Foundation it was disclosed that the response to the appeal for funds during Heart Month was consider- ably less than in previous years. Pres. of the Whitby Chapter, Nigel Schilling has stated, "heart disease and cardiovascular disorders are Canada's No. I killer. The situation is frightening as the occurrance of these prob- lems has become almost epidemic, all too often striking people in their very prime of life. There would scarcely be a household in the community where someone within the family circle is not affected. Research has provided nany answers and enabled the development of techniques to combat heart disease but the final answer is still being sought and only through research made possible by the assistance of interested citizens will the day come about when heart disease will not be the dreaded enemy that it is today." All households in the community received a mailer in January and Pres. Schilling has urged all who have not made contributions to respond generously. Those who have misplaced the special envelope can make contribu- tions to the Whitby Chapter 'of the Ontario Heart Founda- tion, c/o Toronto Dominion Bank, Dundas Street East.
