SPOR, II Minor Basebali Day in Whitby For 600 boys in Whitby, this Saturday is a very special day. Proclaimed by Town of Whitby Counicil1 as "Minor Basebail Day in the Town of Whitby", the day marks the officiai opening of the basebaîl season which wil cxtcnd through until September. Between now and thien sorne wilI experience that particular "feel" whicil oemes when you know you have given the bail a good ride, some wilI experience the* frustration of missing by, the -proverbial mile; there will be the satisfaction of a play well exectited, there will be the disappointment and anger at "booting" one, allof these go together to make a season for the major leaguer or the T-Baller who puts on a glove or holds a bat for the first time. For flive years the weather gods have smiled on this particular day coming up witl, sunny skies and short sleeve temperatures and Whitby Minor Basebaîl Assoc. officiais are pinning their hopes on another beautiful day to get the 74 season underway. The "opening" begins with a parade of W.M.B.A. players which leaves Kinsmnen Park at 10:00 a.rn. sharp, proceeding down Brock St. through the down- town section and ending at Peel Park where there wili be a traditional "flrst bail"' ceremony. The group of young players wili be led in their march to the park by the Whitby Brass Band under the direction of Stan Redfern. Civic officiais will take part in the brief opening cere- mnony highlighted by the throwing of the season's "Ilirst bail". Mayor Des Newman, representatives of Council, the -Whiltby Recreation Dept.
