Words from West'Ly'nde' by Norm, Meuling FAMILY FUN DAY At approximately 10:00 a.m., on Sunday, June 16 th, a motley crew of 5 people surveyed the damlage in Central Park following 24 hours of rainfail. Despite the cloudfilled sky, a mornentous decision was reached. The W.L.C.A. Family Fun Day would go o r provided it didn't ramn before 1:00 p.m. As the group repaired to their respective abodes, Bruce Lennie was heard to remark "Don't worry guys, 1 spoke to the man this morning and the sun will shine." And beginning at 12-:45 p.m., the sun began to shine, and it shone for the rest of the day, and Farnily Fun Day took place. The Day'began with the novelty races, th e adult-child whecel-barrel race and the adult-cifld three-legged race. The entrants for both these races were so numnerous that each race had four hteats leading to a final. The 50 yd. dashes for 5- 8 years of age, and the 100 yd. dashes for 9 - 12 years of age followed. and, if 1 might be permnitted an observa- tion. there was a great deal of promise shown., especially by the girls. The racing highlight of the day wvas the special 25 yard dash l'or 3 and 4 year olds. There were more entrants for this race than any other. and, although no world records were threateried, it was by far the most exciting of the races run during the day. There wvas very little wind during the day so that the kite-tlying contest didn't get off the ground. The bahl- throwing Jnd skipping events did, however, and they were well received. The excitement of the races wasn't there .s0 that the winners displayed their talents before fewer people. The mnôther-daughitcr volleyball gamne was not held, but the father-son (and daughter) soccer game was. 1 watched the first haîf of the game, and was very impressed by the serious, determined, will to win displayed by the fathers. When 1 le 'ft the score wvas deadlocked at two a piece. Says something about will to win, doesn't it? Another highlight of the day was the appearance of the ire engine manned by- Whitby firemen. Their dîsplay wvas very well-receîved, and we should ail thank them for taking the time to attend. The day finished withi the bicycle decorating contest. Nearly 100 boys and girls entered, and it was really too bad there couldn't have been the samne number of winners. Every bike entered showed the effort of the person who decorated the bike,, and our congratulations go out to ail ,',who participated. - "h day was participation. and four Thîe' emphasisofe family particýipation aWards were given. In their order of finish. the winning famnilies were the McEacherns of Bannerman Court. the Lennies of Gerrie Court, the Gleaves of Harper Court and the Dicksons of Michael Boulevard. Ail in ail. it wvas a good day. The organizers and event supervisors. the cooks and the judges deserve a round of applause. After only two weeks of operat ion the Whitby Recrea- tion Departments Roller Skate program has established itself as a clean fun-filled cvening's entertainmeîlt. Many comments have been heard about the program content being complete and diversified. Specialty num- bers periodically spaced th- roughout the evening include such populars as backward skate, couples only, trios, etc., etc. There is music for everyone and requests are taken. Mr. Ken Barber, the Roller Skate Co-ordînator has es- tablished a very high calibre of programn with strict con- trol over crowds, efficient use of staff, and a structured programn whîch can accorno- date the whole farnily.
