ACandian finn New York NEW YORK - This last tiip to New York City, as part of my summer-fall vacation, broughît back sornereories almost twenty years ago whienIi for the first time visited this City. I can remeînber the 500 - mile trip from Toronto took me almosi I12 long hours, practically non-stop driving on one-larie highways. It was indeed a happening those days getting off to New York in a Volkswagen, averaging about 50 miles per hour. 1 can remnember making several stops along the route for coffee breaks and sandwiches. It was almost a ritual to stop at one of the diners where food was cheap and weIl prepared. Another favorite cl1ain restaurant of mine was the Johnsons. Both were the only highway restaurants worîh stopping over. The rest of them were second-rate and the coffee they served tasted like dishwater. Ahi, those were the days! Today, I'm still driving a Volkswagen, but the distance lias shrunk by îhree hours, thanks to better roads and super highways. The farniliar Route I17 is a beautiful double highway, as good as the New York State Thruway. And, it's free of charge. Along the scenic route. now, there are a number of more diners and Johinsons, but their food prices have doubled. Oh, the great inflation hias hit everyone liard in the pocket book. Now tlîat 1 look back twenty years. 1 feel the modern trends and inflation have taken the fun out of driving. Seldom will 1 have to change a flat tire in tlhe middle of the night or willI1 have to spend a chilly night in a dim-lit restaurant waîing for the snow storrn to subside. On one occasion, 1 can remember, 1 and a friend of mine, named Mike, set a new driving record to New York City. The entire trip took us 1 5 hours because of storm and icy road conditions. The change is also noticable once yuu reach the city limits of New York. Particularly, Manhiaîtan hias almost changed beyond recognition. There are thousands of new office buildings, the World Trade Centre lias beeni builî and the famous Timnes Square now resemnbles a huge sex show case with porno movies to the left and rîglit. The good old movies like 'Gone with the Wind", seern to have, liîerally. gone with the wind. The Broadway theatres feel uncomi- fortable being next door to some of tlîe sexiest shîows including live (simulated) sex acts of aIl sorts. Sîrolling up and down Times Square is a life-timne experience. Pimps, prostitutes, porno kings. wheelers and dealers and homosexuals find Times Square a lucrative area for their personal needs and high-pitched businesses. As a malter of fact, pornography is big business these days in New York. Millions of dollars are made from sex shows and porno presentations. And, if there are any complaints - few will know or hear about it. It is a smooth operation ail the way. Crime is also high on the list. Every day hundreds of cases are reported to the police department. Petty crimes gets little attention from the law enforcenient agencies. One policeman told me: It is pointless to go after corn- mon thefts and assaulîs. Ail we can do is make out one more report and then file il away." [n New York, both the city police departm-ent and the FBI work closely together in an attempt to keep the grizzly crime rate down. As one of the biggest cases was considered the so-called "mad bomber" incident which is now being told by a top detective in the New York Post magazine. The real story of how the mad bomber was captured sounded 10 me like a chapter our of a crime novel. Every day New York policemen use guns to appreliend Minimum Wage A minimum wage of $2.25 an hour for employees in general industry will be- corne effective throughout Ontario, October 1, 1974, The minimum rate wihl apply- to ail employees ex- cept stuidents under the age of 1 8. Are yuu going to put your own children up for adoption? Cool it for awhile. Above ail talk this matter over with family and friends. Consider the consequences of the st.ep you are about to take. What about your future, if the marriage is unsuccessful -and you are a di- vorcee with children of your own.
