PAGE 8, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1974, WHITBY FREE PRESS BIRD 'S EYE VIEW -JIN OUA/lI It Was ReaIIy Such Fun Really it was. Would 1 lie about a thing like this? In fact, it was so much fun 1 thought I'd have to check into the hospital with a hernia. Last week's acrobatics have thorouighly convinced me that mani was flot meant to lift heavy objects, and boats are meant to remain in the water..forever. About halfway through the whole ordeal of trying to gel my boat out of the water 1 envied more and more those people living near saIt water where there isn't much of a problem about boats freezing in the water. In my case it was more than just freezing water, 1 pîanned to do some fixing up over the winter. Little did 1 realize it was my back 1 would be fixing Up. Another lesson 1 learned this summer was that boats are high up on the status îist. The bigger boat you have with sleek, lines, or a big engine with twin screws and chrome horris and alI that the higher up you are on the status list. In other words people who own little 14 foot, aluminum fishing boats are Iooked upon by the owners of big 35 foot cruisers as merely possessing littîe play toys. Be that as it may iî's a heck of a lot easier getting a little 14 footer out of the water than it is a one-ton 22 footer. Not only is it easier but it's cheaper and you don't use near as many of those little pink tranquilizer pis either. The day I was free to move my boat out of the water it started snowing early in the moming. l'm not a great believer in horoscopes and ail that but 1 did consider the snow a sign of things to corne. Snow at the end of Septem- ber and 1 had ta move a boat! 1 almost stayed in bed the entire day. 1 had to take the boat by water to Frenchman's Bay s0 they could lift it Up with a big sling and set IL down on a traler. My first problem was how to drive the boat to Frenchman's Bay without freezing ta death at the wheel which is outside the cabin. WeIl after many shots of rum and a few gazes at the seagulîs wearing snowshoes 1 made it to Frenichman's Bay M and a warm marina office. It took ten minutes of teeth chattering before 1 could explain to the man why 1 was there. He sauntered out to the dock, looked at the boat and said, "Why don't you save the lift fee and have it condemnied right here in the water?"' Everybody's a comedian these days. The deal was 1 would have the boat set on a trailer very graciously supplied by Jim Broughton, owner of Brough ton Motors, and then Jim would corne over with his 10w truck and bring back the boat and traiter. After a nerve wracking 1 5 minutes of setting the boat on the traiter and blocking it up 1 was, ready for Jim to take the whole works back to Whîby. Jim Broughton had a tow catll in Toronto and couldn't pick up the boat so that left me to get it back to Whitby with my haîf ton truck. Disaster! A million terrible thouglits went through my mind. 1 visioned the boat tip- ping over and lying on its side in the middle of the road, I pictured the truck liaving a cardiac halfway home and worse still 1 had a mental picture of a big burly cop writing out a whole book of tickets. Since 1 have run afoul of the law a couple of times lately 1 didn't need another session in court. Well after a series of shuttling from GO bus to Whitby to get my truck and back to Frenchmnan's Bay 1 was finally heading for Whitby with two tons of trailer and boat in tow..and my nerves completely shot. 1 passed a police car in Ajax and 1 nearly cashed in my chips from sheer fright but he didn't take off after me. From that point on, the whole thing was a nightmare of honking, lined Up cars, heavy traffic, red lights and gawking pedestrians. Two days later the boat was in the driveway, the traiter returned and my nerves somewhat calmed down. 1 refuse to think about moving the boat back out next Spring. 1 think I will spend next summer sitting on the boat in the drive way, under the sprinkler hose and listening to a stereo record of sounds of the surf. And I'm -sure the Iockmasters on the Trent will breathe a lot easicr knowing I'm home safe in the driveway, unable 10, wreak havoc on their equipment.
