FIR E eR WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1(4, 1974 Man Drowned A Whitby man krowned last Monday night when his, car plunged into Lake Simcoe near Brechin. · Dead is Norman Douglas Craig, 43, of 129 Lupin Drive, Whitby. The car was apparently southbound between Beaver- ton and Brechin when it failed to negotiate a sharp turn landing in the lake. Mr. Craig. was apparently thrown out of the car. An assembler at General Motors, Mr. Craig is survived by his wife Lillian, his child- ren, Mrs. R. Bell of Oshawa, Coronation Rd. Ban Tabled Durham regional public works committee postponed discussions on Whitby's ~ heavy truck ban on Corona- tion Road pending deputa- tions from pit operator Ivan Hess and area residents. Whitby first passed the by-law prohibîting heavy trucks on Coronation Road last June, but did not receive region.approval. The by-law was .again submitted for re- gion approval. Whitby regional councillor Gerry Emm informed the other members of the committee that Whitby coun- cil had originally passed the by-law after receiving tele- grams from area residents, but had not met with Mr. Hess. Brenda, Lisa, Kevin, Russell, and Brett of Whitby and his grandchild, Sabrina. Funeral services were held Thursday at the W. C. Town Funeral Chapel, and inter- ment was at the Mount Lawn Cemetery in Oshawa. Trial Delayed For the second time the trial of Toronto lawyer Gerald Shea, 49, accused of murder, will not proceed. Tuesday, Mr. Justice John Morden adjourned the trial until the next Supremp Court session in January, because a key witness has been hospi- talized. The first time the case went to trial in the Whitby Court in April, a mis-trial was declared after six days of proçeedings. Shea is accused of murdering 31-year-old San- dra Speiran at Atherley, Ontario, on July f4, 1973. Whitby's Wayne Weller. hidden Road Work For Ashbburn The commissioner's re- pcrt to the Regional Works Committee recommends an urban geometiric design be approved for Regional Road Number 5 through the village of Ashburn consisting of two 11 foot through lanes and one 10 foot parking lane, providing a total pavement width of 32 feet with the parking lane located on the south side. Plant Tender Paul Carruthers Construc- tion Ltd., Markham has sub- mitted the lowest tender, $1,028,034 for construction of a two million gallon per day addition to the Corbett Creek Water Pollution Con- trol Plant in Whitby. The commissioner's re- port to the Durham Regional Works Committee has recom- mended acceptance of the tender subject to Ontario Municipal Board Approval and approval of a loan from Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation. The Corbett Creek plant services the Town of Whitby and the City of Oshawa. The region has budgeted $1,300,000 for this project, which has a total estimated cost of $1,148,000. Previously in February 1970, the County of Ontario received approval ,from the* Ministry of Transportation and Communications for a two lane, 42 foot top rural $56,650 Low Tender Silvio Construction Ltd., Maple, has submitted the lowest tender, $56,650.53 for the installation of watermains and sanitary sewers in the Town of Whitby. Watermains are to be installed on Front Street from Brock to Dufferin on Dunlop Street, from Green to Peel, on Green Street from Clements to St. Lawrence and on Byron Street from Chest- nut to Maple. Sanitary sewers are to be installed on Victoria Street to service Iroquois park. WiÎfe Watches Truck Theft Five trucks and a trailer were stolen by five men from a Thickson Road construc- tion yard while the owner's wife watched. Mrs. Martha Ashmore, wife of paving contractor . Ken Ashmore, 109 Naissau Street, Oshawa, said she noticed three trucks missing from the yard and stopped to question the five men who were removing the other trucks with a tow truck. They told her they had been authorized to remove some for scrap. The trucks were later recovered from a Whitby scrap yard, but at last report a box trailer was still missing. Lottery For 0'Connor H.S. Denis O'Connor High School will be having another lottery, this time to raise $180,000 for a new gym- nasium. Hopes are that 100,000 books of tickets, at three dol- lars a book, will be sold. Draws are to be held Dec. 22, January 5, January 19, and February 2. Prizes in each draw are: $2,500 for first, for one winner; $100 for ten second prize winners; $50 for 20 third prize win- ners; and Olympic Lottery tickets for 50 fourth prize winners. The lottery is administer- ed by the Parents' Club of the school, with the help of the students.
