Are you an adventurer? Do you look forward to exploring through new places or are you content to sit and look at travel folders and watch television. No matter which way you answer I'il bet we're almost ail guilty of doing little or no exploring right here in our home town. I'm guilty as well. There are times I know less about what is going on in Whitby and the attractions Whitby has to offer than I do about small towns or big cities outside of Whitby. Last weekend was no exception. I was out of town and I felt like exploring. I suppose its because I was out of town that I felt· the adventuring spirit because when I'm at home I can only think of ail the work that needs doing around the house and when I'm away I can't do the work anyway so..... If you're single and away from home a lot as I am you have to settle for a lot of restaurant cooking. I think after' a while you get radier caustic about all restaurants and good ones with home style cooking are hard to find. When I say, "home style" cooking I mean like mother would cook for you - not the type of cooking I do at home which is guaranteed to assure most people of ashort tour of the J.O. Ruddy Hospital while they're having their stomach pumped out. So it was with the idea of finding a nice place to eat that I went exploring last weekend. Large lavish places turn me off because half the time the food is poor and the other half of the time the food and service are excellent but the prices give me a severe pain in the wallet afterwards. As I was driving along I noticed a sign in Greek on the front of a little restaurant, part of a small building dwarfed on ail sides by big comglomerate type buildings. Now I must admit that sometimes my criteria for good eating places seems a little weird but that sign turned my thoughts to pleasant memories of home cooked Grecian 'food so [1parked the car and walked back to the restaurant. As restaurants go it looked like any other with a row of chrome and leatherette booths down each wall leaving the customer to walk down the galley in the middle. As I gazed around I noticed few customers. Even those looked like they might-even be friends or relatives of the white aproned owner. But, as I said my memories of Greek food prevailed and so two friends and I boldly walked in and made like hungry customers. A couple of men in aprons jumped out of a booth and one of them asked us to sit in the dining room at the back of the booth section. He turned on the lights back there, led us to a table and put on a cartridge tape of music from Greece. As we rid ourselves of our coats and got settled the waitress appeared just slightly ahead- of what I presumed to be the cook and in an impish way one of my friends asked her what was cooking. To this question the cook replied that we should come out to the kitchen and see for ourselves so that's exactly what we did! - At home I wouldn't wander into a local restaurant and yell, "What's cooking", nor would I be invited back to the kitchen to see but I was away from home and in an adventurous mood. The mood was infectious because we ail gladly toured the kitchen and savoured the myraid of delicious aromas whîich immediately caused us to salivate in expectation of a great meal. We were so undecided as to which delicacy to chose that wehad the cook make each of us up a plate with a little of everything. When the plates eventually followed us from the kitcher we were amazed at the quantity of food. More food in fact than I though my stomach might hold. Immediately before these huge dishes came out the waitress brought us some homemade soup and as we madly dug in she told us her mother made it. The old story about chicken soup like mother used to make was true! During the main course the cook biought us some small patties of ground beef and said he would like to know how we liked them. Just our expressions probably gave him the answer that we thought they were great. The whole meal was so fantastically delicious it seemed like we were there for hours trying to do it ail justice when along camne the waitress withî a dessert which she said was prepared by her father, the cook and it was on the house. Well I ate it and I enjoyed it but l'm sure I did myself an injury. Still, it was ail worth it. In fact, I look forward to going back to London and visiting that little Greek restau- rant again. It ail goes to prove that exploring can be rewarding - especially to. your stomuch, if you don't mind a few stretched muscles!
