Now, for the first time a vaccine to prevent thîs highly contagious disease is. available in Canada. Tie new governmnent- approved vaccine- lias been greeted with enthusiasm by Canadian veterinarians. "AI- thoughi canine parainfluenza is not generally fatal, it is a great nuisance to both thie dog and its owner", said Dr. Wayne Smith, president of the Toronto Academy of Veterinary Medicine. "Until now, tiere bas been no effec- tive treatment or prevention for this very conîrnon canine disease. Now;, we hiave an apparently effective and safe vaccine that xiii protect liealthy puppies and dogs". Canine paraintlùenza, transmitted to dogs of al ages by coughing, is most prevalent in pet sh ops, kennels, dog shows, humane soçieties, pounds or wherever dogs congregate. In healthy, aduit dogs, the disease is gen- erally of a niid nature and short in duration; but puppies, debilitated and stressed animais can develop severe respiratory probIemns such as pneumonia or chronic bronchitis. The new vaccine, ap- The Whitby Fire Depart- ment wil be conducting its third annual Junior Fire Department this summer for the purpose of educating and training boys or girls, 1l, 12, 13 and 14 years of age, on the proper actions in case of fire and on fire prevention miethods. The program will be con- ducted in two sessions du rîi the rnonth of July and each session xiii be in two periods, rnorning or afternoon. The first session will be froin July 7 until July 18 and the second session will be fromn July 21 until AugusC'l. The time of the periods will be 9:15 am. until 11:45 a.m. or 1: 15 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. each day. Available only in coin- bination form, Tissuvax*D- H-P provides solid protection against three major canine viral diseases: distemiper, hep- atitis and canine parainfluen- za. Tissuvax*5 also provides protection against leptospir- osis, a bacteria whichi attacks the kidneys and liver. Both vaccines are available throughi veterinary doctors in Canada and the United States.' The vaccine was developed by Pitman-Moore Ltd., an operating division of Johin- son & Johnson, and one of the oldest and largest pro- ducers of ethical biologicals and pharmaceuticals, diagno- stics and surgical products for the veterinary medical profes- sion. Puppies are f'irst vaccin- ated at ine xeeks and again at * 12 weeks of age. Puppies can be vaccinated as early as 6weeks old. Older dogs should receive two initiai in- oculations, three weeks apart; For maximum protection, uogs of ail ages should be given a booster dose every 12 months rhereafter. The fire department will also conduct a home fire prevention programi beginn- ing June 2 from 1:30 to 3:30 and 6:30 to 8:30.
