If one were spending that amount of money in a profit-oriented busi- ness like a retail outlet, I'm certain one would re- ceive courteous attention to their needs. If a price list, catalogue, or booklet were required, they would be sent immed- iately. And'yet, when 1 call the Post Office, I invariably interrupt some poor tired postal employ- ee, probably in the mid- die of a day dream. t called again this morning, identified my- self and the convepation went something like this: - Post Office - yes, would you please mail me your most recent householder list...... - (talking to another employee) "Do we have a householder list? (voice in back- ground).....yeah. "We don't mail them out anymore do we? no! - (talking to me again) You'll have to come in and pick it up - don't mail 'em out anymore. - "But for the past 3 years you've mailed me one each time I've requested, have you changed your policy? - (no answer, just a muffied sigh and a question to the other employee) "they say we useta mail it out" (back to me, sounding like he'd consumed 98 valiums) OK, w-what's your address. I told him and he hung up. No thank you, or goodbye - he slammed down the phone. If the same thing happened at Eaton's, i would cal) Simpson's, if it happened at Gus Brown's, I would call Cliff Mills and so on. The Post Office has a monopoly? Yes - but so does the telephone company and I've always been received courteous- ly when I've called. An employee answer- ing a telephone in this manner obviously has not had proper telephone training and the Post Office is to blame. This is only an example of lack of courtesy - we ail know many cases of lack of efficiency. Corne on Ottawa, clean up this mess or give it to private enterprise - someone who knows how to operate a courte- ous and efficient business and maybe even make a profit! Yours sincerely, AI Spencer, Brock Street South Whitby, Ontario. Dear Sir; It is unfortunate that so much furor has emerged from the show- ing of the Documentary Special TV program "En- counter with Cancer"' recently by Dr. Betty Stephenson, president of the Canadian Medical Association. It appears Dr. Stephenson was so upset about the section on the use of Leyatril (amigdalin) in Germany and Mexico that she demanded equal time on the CBC network to refute its use. Dr. Steph- enson has been a champ- ion of many women's rights including abortion and has shown great leadership in times of difficulty for the CMA. She has handled near rebellion by her doctor members and shown rwr"tel@ lette rs box 206 whitby great fortitude, but her demands for censoring the part of the program she dislikes does not add to her stature and open- mindedness she is known for. The documentary was weil produced and in fact showed Dr. Good of the prestigious Sloan Ketter- ing Institute making the remark that they "have had results" with the treatment condemned by Dr. Stephenson. i should like to quote for the record a state- ment by Dr. Roger J. Williams, biochemist as read into the congres- sional record by Senator Hubert Humphirey, a former U.S. Presidential candidate, on October 16th,.1974. "All the money and talent in the world won't necessarily hasten the conquest of cancer, be- cause researchers are neglecting th'. vital area of nutrition. Cells which are nourished at a high level of excellence may be able to resist success- fully the action of carc- inogens and the attack of cancer viruses," the highly respected Univer- sity of Texas Professo)r said, but at "no public or private institute deal- ing with cancer anywhere in the world, are there groups of real experts in cellular nutrition." Like most medical men, many cancer researchers have an "anti-nutrition bias" because they were some- times taught not to believe in vitamins..... which is about as ridicu- lous as it would be not to believe in protein, amino acids, calcium or iodine". Yours sincerely, Dean J. Kelly, Box 1,000 Port Perry, Ontario Canvassers' work much appreciated Dear Sir; On behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society Whitby Branch, i wish to thank the citizens of the town of Whitby for their support of our an- nual campaign last April. Our objective this year was $13,000 but with the help of all the team captains and their can- vassers, i am happy to report that to date we have in our campaign account $19,333.39. This is $6,333.39 more than our goal this year. But it will help greatly in the research, supplies, and transportation of patients and should give each and every canvasser a feeling of great satis- faction knowing that we have lived up to our symbot which is depicted on the cancer symbol. The symbol is known as a "Caduceus" - the sword that will never be laid aside until the fight against cancer has been won. May I again. thank ail the people that helped. There where eVer 900 in total. It is impossible for me to thank each person personally for a job well done. I also would like to thank your newspaper for the excellent cover- age of our campaign and wish you ail future suc- cess in the management of a fine paper. Yours truly, John Visser, Campaign Chairman, Canadian Cancer Society, Whitby Branch. -mmý y
