PAGE 10, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1975, WHITBY FREE PRESS Expos win baseball tournanent A double-round knockout for the Whitby Midget/Juve- nile tournament led the Whitby Optimist Expos to a victory with three straight wins last week. In the first game, the Whitby Optimist Braves beat Bramely Motors by a narrow margin of 7-6. Dean Gypens not only brought in the win- ning run but was also the winning pitcher for the Braves. Kurt Roberts, Harold Aldred, Jeff Geurts, Henry Van Den Hoogen each brought in a run with Dean Gypens bringing in two. Brian Roberts, Chester Down, Joe Pengally, Brian Hadden, Scott McLellan and David Stocks each got a run. The losing pitcher was Robert Kivel. The next game saw the Whitby Optimist Expos stomp Bramely Motors with a 8-0 shut out. Steve Sarginson, the winning pitcher, struck out 16 players from Bramely in seven innnings. David Ai- len, Randy Sullivan, Steve Sarginson, Tony Vella, Mark England, John Heffer and Alex Strynatka each got one run for the Expos. The los- ing pitcher was Brian Hadden. This game eliminated Bra- mely Motors from the rest of of the tournament. Half an hour later, the Whitby Expos were up against the Whitby Braves. Again, Steve Sarginson brought the Expos to a victory, this time 9-4. In this game Sarginson struck out 15 Braves. After pitching 14 staright innings, Sarginson struck out a total of 31 players. George Bouw- meester, Tony Vella, Dean Grant each got one run and David Allen, Steve Sarginson and Randy Sullivan each got two. For the Braves, David Morton and Harold Aldred each got one run, while Dean Gypens got two. The losing pitcher was Dean Gypens. In the seventi à ii-d final in- ing, the Expos came back with three runs. Alex Stry- natka, Rndy Sullivan and Rick Vanderlinde each got, one run wilh Vanderlinde getting the winning run for the Expos. The winning pit- cher was David Allen for the Expos. Roberts brought in the two runs for the Braves and the losing pitcher was Dean Gypens. The fianl game, with the Expos against the Braves, was a close and exciting one. The end result was the Whitby Optimist Expos winning by only one run--the final score 10th anniversary GRMLA plans speci Plans aïe underway tor a special dinner and dance on November 29 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of operation of the Garrard Road Minor Lacrosse Associ- tion. The GRMLA executive would like to sec as many for- mer and present association members attend the affair, at the Auto Workers Credit Union Auditorium on King Street West in Oshawa, as possible. The executive is planning to send letters to many former members whose addresses. can be obtained. After playing four complete innings, the score was still 0-0. Kurt Roberts got one run after the fifth inning which put the Braves in a short lead. Proverbs 27: 2, 3 V's win exhibition In a real seesaw affair, the Whitby Flying V's edged Peterborough 3-2 in exhi- bition mosquito soccer ac- tion. With a number of regulars missing and several first year players in the lineup, the V's played with the poise usually reserved for more experi- enced teams. William Andreoli tied the game with a shot from the penalty area about seven minutes into the second half. Seven minutes later, Whitby's Ian Porter scored with a drive from point-blank range to put the V's ahead. Peter- borough tied the score three minutes later on a good goal by Mark Forrester. The best goal of the game gave Whitby the win. A corner kick from Greg Degannes was deflected into the net on a flying header by the always hard working Doug Grant. David Blacquiere again turned in an excellent goal- tending performance for the winners. Pizzazzips second The Whitby Pizzazzips Pee- wees of the County Interdis- trict Soccer League, who wound up in first place at the end of the regular season, had to settle for second best in the playoffs. The Pizzazips were dump- ed 3-0 by Peterborough in the championship contest. In the opening half, neither team played champ- ionship-calibre soccer, Whitby were slow and did not play up to their usual standard of excellence. In addition, they were robbed of a sure goal when a booming shot off upright. Peterborough took the lead shortly before the half-time whistle sounded on a goal after a scramble in front of the Whitby net. The Pizzazips dorninated in the second half and bounced two more shots off the woodwork. In their ef-I fort to tie the game, Whitby concentrated too much on offence and their defence suffered, resulting in two Peterborough goals. Scorers for Peterborough were Robert Dardis, Dave Holroyd and John Mark. Rob Norris picked up the shutout.
