Alf Phillips Jr. of the Ter- race Curling Club in Toronto becamne the third defending champion to return in a bon- spiel which bas neyer had a repeat winner in 10 years. Phillips, who was the Cana- dian Champion in 1967, curl- ing with John Cushing, Peter Phillips, and Dave Phillips, advanced by defeating Mark McDonald of Kingston 6-5, Don Jenkins of Oshm.a 7-2 and George Morrissey of Welland 6-5. The other rink returning in the first event is not sur- prisingly skipped by the man who played second for Aif Phillips the year he won the Canadian Brier, Ron Ma:ilning of Lampton, Manning, along with two other members of that '67 Brier winner-iohn Ross and Keith Reilly-and Moe Handford at second stone, returned with victories over Jim Waite of St. Thomas 11-4, Gary Weisz of London 10-8, and Bob Mann of Dixie 7-5. im Waite of St. Thomas qualified for the fourth event with an 8-7 victory over Dennis Henson of Thornhill and Mark McDonald of King- ston returns with a 6-5 deci- sion over Ken Buchan of London. Bob Mann of Dixie and George Morrissey of Welland, by virtue of two early wins, also return to curi on Dec. 6 in the third event. Previous qualifiers for the first event prize of $2,400 are Don Murray of Dundas Valley, Bill Martynuik of High Park, Bill Creber of Tam Heather and Eaule Hushagen of Humber Highland. Qualifying play continues on Friday at the Whitby Curl- ing Club wlth action at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. In the early play, Paul Savage, Avonlea Curling Club, goes against Ron Patton, Glenmore Curling Club; Earle Maguire, Ottawa, vs. Amnie Easter, London Highland; Barry Mitchell, Royal Cana- dian, vs. Paul Hotton, Ottawa; and Ken Rowaa, Richmond Hill, vs. Earle Morris, Ottawa Navy. At 11 a.m., Eldon Coombe, Ottawa, takes on Bill Grozelle, Haileybury; Mew Smuda, Royal Canadian, vs. J-arry Adams, Landsdowne; Terry Begin, Ottawa, vs. Garry Weir, Humber 'Highland, and Bruce Delaney, City View, vs. Bill Dixon, Brampton.
