Councillor Edwards made the anology during discussion to decide if theTown should pay a $5,110 bill submitted by Whitby architect Alan Wilcox for attending 31 on-site meetings between Septenber, 1974 and April, .1975. The $5,110 bill was in excess of his $10,000contract with the Town which had retained hin to supervise construction of the Iroquois Park swimming pool complex because Town officials were not satisfied with the quality of work being do-e by the contractor. In attempting to justify the $5,110 bill, Mr. Wilcox said that Town staff had re- quested he attend the 31 on-site meetings despite his protests. tht such meetings were unnecessary. Cou cillor Edwards was oppose to the payment of the $5,110 bill,·saying that he was dissatisfied with some of the work on the pool complex in spite of Mr. Wilcox's superyision. However, Councillor - Ed- wards found little support. Heritage Day, designed to stimulate an appreciation of our Canadian heritage, has been a pet project of the national Association of Kins- men Clubs since 1973, when a government grant was sought to initiate a National Flag Day. Througi the efforts of two successive national executives, a grant of $45,000 was made available last year for the purchase of promotional materials and services to be to be used in promoting- Heritage Day. All Kinsmen Clubs were asked to plan and stage an event or celebration and tie it in with the Heritage Day theme. The Kinsmen Club of Whitby sponsored an essay competition for local students in grades seven and eight. Students were asked to con- centrate on the heritage and/or founding people in the general area of Durharn Region. The Kinsmen Club of Brooklin and District visited area -schools, attempting to instill nationalistic pride in the students by speaking on our heritage. Mayor Jim Gartshore, speaking on behalf of Whitby Council said "I think they (Kinsmen) should be com- mended, especially the Whitby and Brooklin Clubs". - "We think our people are doing a tremendous job", he said. "I, frankly am very pleased with their efforts". "I think Heritage Day will become a very important day", Mayor Gartshore said. He thinks and hopes that Heritage Day wilI become a national holiday "because I really don't think we do enough to tell ourselves and children about our heritage."
