Months of hard work went into forming the Whitby Merchants who will compete in the already established Eastern Ontario Baseball Association Senior division which includes teams from Ajax, Oshawa, Port Hope, Kendal, Lindsay, Little Britain, Peterborough and Kingston. To cover the cost of operating such a team, the Merchants are depending solely on sponsorships from local businesses, according to team president Gord Hanna and manager Gord Forrester. One business, whiçh is helping the team get off the ground is the Whitby Athletic Club which making available its facilities for training purposes until the outdoor sessions beein. Anyone wishing to try out for the diub should contact Gord Forrester at 668-5567 between 5 and 7 p.m. Player registration will be in the council chambers at held on Saturday at 2 p.m. 405 Dundas Street West. People interested in joining the executive should also attend. Brooklin Redmen are back Senior lacrosse will return to the area this spring, The Brooklin I:-r.Inen, disbanded in 1973, were recently awarded a franchise in the Ontario Lacrosse. Association Major 'A' series. The Redmen will compete in the league with teams from Brampton, Fergus, Owen Sound, St. Catherines and Six Nations. The calibre of play could well be excellent if the league acquires players from the two-year old professional National Lacrosse Association which folded recently because of financial problems. Charlie Ross is President of the Redmen with whom several local players, includ- ing Don Craggs, Bill Down, Marty Van Heuvel, Dave Houston and Elmer Tran, have indicated their interest Whitby Minor Peewees reach quarter finals in cornpeting. It is expected that the roster will consist heavily of local boys when the team begins play in early May. Tryouts and training sessions begin the second week of March in an area school.
