Two Wh i tby Jaycees recei ve hghshnr service to the Jaycee organi- zation, and constitutes a life membership in JCI member organizations. Jaycees is an organization for young men aged 18 to 39, which stresses self develop- ment and community service. A Jaycee unit has been operating in Whitby since 1966. Both Mr. Galpin and Mr. Schilling were the guiding lights of the Whitby Jaycee unit when in 1973-74 it dropped to only three mem- bers, and they made represon- tatives at the regional level for the right to keep the unit open and rebuild it. The rebuilding of the unit since that time has been success- ful, there now being about 30 Jaycees and 13 Jaycettes. Mr. Galpin is a past secretary and past president of the Whitby unit and was particularly involved in the rebuilding of the unit after the president of previots years moved out of Whitby. In 1975-76 he is the treasurer of the Central Region Jaycees. Some of the activities he has been involved in include the County Town Carnival and Santa Clatis parades, Santa Claus House, public relations, unit newsletter, Miles For Millions, Holidays for Handicapped, develop- ment of D'Hillier Park, and numerous Jaycee functions and conventions. "Without his energetic enthusiasm our unit would not have been as active as it has been", the Whitby Jaycees said in their recommendation that Mr. Galpin be awarded a Senatorship. "In the past two years as we have been rebuilding, Steve has been one of the steadying influences". Mr. Schilling and Mr. Galpin joined Jaycees a year apart, Mr. Schilling in 1969 and Mr. Galpin in 1970. The Senatorships were con- ferred upon Nigel Schilling and Steve Galpin by National Vice President Syd Harmon and Whitby Jaycees President Bill Wolters. A JCI Senatorship is the highest award in Jaycees, presented for outstanding Schilling are the first Whitby Jaycees to be made senators. When he received the award, Mr. Galpin commented that for the first time in his six or seven years in Jaycees, he was at a loss for words, but both he and Mr. Schilling found enough words to thank their fellow Jaycees for the honor conferred upon them. Special messages of con- gratulations were presented by Mr. Harmon, Executive Regional Director Lloyre Stockdale, and Regional Director Don McCumber. A letter of congratulations from National President Cecil Beauchamp was also presented at the meeting. Both Mr. Galpin and Mr. Schilling have been involved in the various training courses offered by Jaycees. "Nigel is always available to give advice or assist any Jaycee that runs into a problem", the Whitby Jaycees said in their recommendation for a Senatorship. During the past seven years, Mr. SchilPing and Mr. Galpin have been involved in almost every Jaycee project, and were responsible for rejuvenating the unit when it nearly folded in 1973-74. The JCI Senatorship is the highest honor in Jaycees and is awarded only on specia! occasions for outstanding service to the organization. Free Press Photo tlandicrafts show held at senior citizens' centre A varied display of handi- Hork and crafts was shown Saturday afternoon at the new senior citizens' activity centre on Bro :k Street South. Rug hooking, needle sjoint, and bagello were displayed by Phylis Norris, Edna Guthrie, Florence Hopkins, Beryl Merril and Mary Bowman. Walter Norris displayed copper tooling, Johanna Decker displayed candle' craft and Oriste Vella showed a collection of stamps. Embroidery,crochet and knitting were displayed by Cadets go to Ottawa Twenty-five members of the Whitby Sea Cadet Corps âvill be visiting Ottawa April 9 to May 1 as part of a citizenship training exercise. During their visit, the cadets will see the House of Commons in session during the question period, and will make tours of the Canadian Mint, the Aeronautical Museum and the National War Museum. The visit to Parliament was arranged through local MPs Ed Broadbent and Norm Cafik.. The officers of the corps and their wives will accom- pany the cadets as chaperones. Edith Britian, Mable Lindley, Vickie Foster, Sadie Packer, Bessie Hodges, and Flora Lott. Mrs. Lott also displayed foil paper craft. Mrs. Hannah MacMillan, program director at the centre displayed drift wood, floral arrangements and jewellery. Mrs. MacMillan said she anticipates further participa- tion in these handwork and crafts in the early fullmonths. A special interest group in "Plants and Things" is held Monday afternoons from 2 p.m. to 4 p.rn. Anyone interested in joining this group nay call the centre at 668-1424.
