She believes that such a balance is neccssary to aîlow every aspect of ýin argumrent. Despite a strong sense of beîieving iii hierself as an indîvicîual, Mrs. Thompson is flot a "womnen's libber". Shie feels that a woinan can accornplish miore byjust being a wornan than by trying to enulate a inan. She enjoyed being a secretary for several years and ,vas also a school bus driver. She lias been involved in guiding and scouts because, shie said "I love kids". Mrs. Thompson has also worked with senior citizens. "These people have so much to give in the way of know- ledge", she said. 1 Mrs. Thompson intends to continue lier political career, "if th'e public secs fit to keep ni e there". She would like to see more of the public corne out to political] forums during can "base their vote on first hand knowledge". Mrs. Thompson views Whitby Council as "a body of people that generally do their very best". She sai d thatt council relies heavily on 44admirably competent" staff. Mrs. Thompson gets annoyed when seemningly illogical decisions are made. She deplores any waste of rnoney 411 get frustrated when 1 see 50 niany needs and the inability to supply those needs", she said. She believes she has made council more aware of a need for equitable facilities for both sexes. She said that, in the past, the town was oriented towards male sports, but this is changing. She enjoys being a Whitby Councillor, because it allows greater comrnunica- tion with people. She des- cribes herself as "very outspoken and honest to 'the where it hurts". She does not like to be stereotyped as a "4politician". She feels it is unfair to label aIl politicians in a derogatory wa y 41just because you have a few rotten ones". Mrs. Thompson said thiit it takes a great deal of courage to becomne a politician. "Numnerous people sit back and criticize but they liaven't the courage to sit in their place", she said. JOY THOMPSON According to Mrs. Thomp- son, most politicians have a great deal'of hindsight. ".We need more with a bit of foresight", she said. Mrs. Thompson said that she lives in Whitby because slie likes small towns. She believes that Whitby has a unique personality and would "figlit tooth and and nails", to maintain that individuality. Mrs. Thompson said that she is totally involved in politics and Whitby because she loves them both. She devotes aIl her tirne to being a "people's" politician because people are what she cares most about. Optimist Club sponsors Bike Safety Week Optimist Club of Whitby will conduet its first arinual Bike Safety Week, designed to teach cyclists and motorists the basics of bicycle safety, fromn May 2 to 9 this year, Don Hopkins, General Bike Safety Week Chairman announced Monday. Mayor Jim Gartshore has proclaimed the safety week to be a community--wide observance, and lias urged "4ail citizens of Whitby to cooperate with the Optimists' effort to make Whitby a safe city for cyclists". 'ne youngsters' bikes will be given complete and thorough gafety checks and the youngsters safety quizzes before the participants are allowed to compete in an obstacle course. Following the check and obstacle course, the youngsters who finish first in each of the three age categor- ies will be given bicyles while the runners up will be awarded trophies.
