At Whitby Psychiatric Hospital, patient rehabilita- tion is carried out in many different ways. One successful program is conducted by Workshop Services, a -division of Vocational and Recreational Services, which actively Solicits contracts frorn industries in the community, tries to teach. patients the rewards of work and provides incentives to- help them to feel that their efforts are worthwhile. PaQents are part of the team, are able to express their feelings about the way things are done. The resuit of tbis voca ti onal assessm-en t training prograni is that patients develop a feeling of pride and a sense of purpose, factors that are essentiat to their well being when they return to the cominunity. Each year for the past three, Workshop Services has doubled its figures for each account and has acquired many new accounts. At present, work is proceeding on the assembly of bicycle chains and locks, electric meters, skipping ropes, toy telephones, baby bottles, food grinders, pad and pen sets and archery sets. Funds accumulated beyond the program costs were used to acquire a 1l -ton truck. The prograrn at Workshop Services would not be successful if the. Whitby Psychiatrie Hospital had not been able to attract proficient instructors and if the 120 patients presently involved had flot cooperatedandfound it beneficial. Workshop Services Super- visor Frank Hilder welcomes former patients who return 10 his workshops on the day care program. However, he feels that the time has corne for establishing community workshops to further their rehabilitation and 10 rein- force their living as an integral part of the corn- munity. Necessary leisure interests and social 'skills are shared with inembers of the cornmunity. "Patients need a great deal of supýôrt and much is being done to serve our society by upgrading citizens and by giving themn somnething to look forward to", was Mr. Hilder's comment on his enthusiasmn concerning the program.
