Councillor Edwards in- formed about 20 people who attended the public meeting that the Whitby-Longueuil twinning is the longest parti- cipating cultural twinning programn in Canada. The twinning beyan officially in, 1969, with exchange visits between the two municipalities being held every year since. The twinning was the direct result of a Whitby Venturers' canoe trip to Expo '67 in 1967, when Whitby residents met somne residents from Longueuil and negotiations began to twin the two communities. Councillor Edwards read the rive principles of twin- ning, which 'are cultural exchanges, non-interference in the iniernal affairs of other communities, non-discrimi- nation, bilingualism, anid solidarity of the United Towns Organization, which organizes twinning of muni- cipalities around the world. Since 1971 the twinning visits have been held on an alternate basis, with Whitby going to Longueuil one year and Longueuil residents com- ing to Whitby the next.
