Looking for a novel way to entertain yourself? How does canoeing aiong drain ditches sound? t could be. an interesting spectator sport although true officionados should bring their own canoes and report to North Street after the next good rainfaîl. A resident of North Street phoned after a recent ramn to say that some children on her street were canoeing along the flooded drain ditches. Leave it to kids to be resourceful when it cornes to having fun. The situation was not so funny, however, to those residents who had to watch the muddy water advancing up their lawns or those whô had te hastily divert it from their garages. The people on North Street have a problein. Do the ditche s need a good cleaning or is the drainage simply inadequate? The Whitby Public Library is establishing a special department to handle the borrowing of films and projectors. t will be operable by June lst and a large and varied selection of films will be available. Apparently, silent 8 m.m. films for use with home projectors înay still be checked eut throughi their main desk but, if you are looking for longer and more sophisticated film miaterial, you are invited te drop in and sec what they have. Your public library in Brooklin has access to ail of the film resources of the main' iibrary in Whitby aînd they invite you BROWN'S to corne in and discover the interesting collection which this library systern has acquired. It is also possible to borrow films from other libraries, catalogues are available, and library personnel will be happy to assist you in any way. Mrs. Valerie Hundert spoke to the ladies group at the ibrary here in Brooklin last week about some of the implernents used in the kitchens of early Amierican/ Canadian women. She brought with her an interesting display of varjous utensils which were of great interest to the ladies. This group meets every Tuesday afternoon fromn 1:30 te 2:30 and a special program for pre-school children is held at the same time - elsewhere in the building I might add. Mothers with young children thus have a chance to talk with other women and enjoy their own programs while the children can have fun in the company of other littie ones themselves. It is nice to sce the revival of the Brooklin Redmen Senior Lacrosse tean. 1Lacrosse lias always been of great interest in this town and currently rnany younig people are involved in minor lacrosse. The Brookiin.Redmen have just recently begun their new season and have already received a lot of support. If you have neyer watched Senior Lacrosse you may be surprised by how lively and fast die play can be. Corne out and watch their next game, you may really enjoy it. Home games will be played at the Memiorial Arena in Brooklin and this Saturday night at 8:30 they will play Six Nations. Recent elections have resulted in a new siate of officers for the Brooklin Legion. These are the men who will be running legion affairs during the rîext year: President, R. F. Fledges; lst Vice President, R. 1-eron; 2nd Vice President, Bud Wilson; Secretary, Johin Yates; Treasurer, Ed Macdonald; and Sgt. at Armis, John Deremo; Fred Phillips will be in charge of public relations, and Sid Bailey is the Membership Chairman. George Boake is the Building Chairman and Eric Stancer the new Poppy Chairmnan. Steve Cosgrove and Jack Little will share the duties of Canteen Chairman. The next general meeting will be on June 20. There is only a little over a week until the Fair. Hope' you've ail got your floats at least beyond the planning stage. Nobody seems to have an exact count on the number of floats we may expect to see in the parade this year. I'd like to know what your organization is planning. If you caîl and tell me about your unique creation there will be time to write about it for the column of June 2nd so the whole town will know what we may expect to see. Unless you've aIl got some secret surprise you plan to spring on us, how about a little preview? Caîl Val 655-4317. Whitby Scouts to save trees Anyone driving aliong Brock Street over the Highway 401 Bridge in the past week may have noticed that the fine stands of pine trees surrounding the bridge have been felled in the name of progress. The trees, planted aboul 35 years ago when the higbway was constructec through Whitby, are being eut down in preparation foi widening the highway from four te six lanes. I-owever, efforts are being made by the Whitby Recrea- tion Department and the Whitby District Boy Scouts to save a few specimen trees. Negotiations are under way with the Ministry of Transportation and Com- municationis at Downsvie m to dig up a number of the trees and transplant thern on the site of the proposeé nature trail along Pringie Creek which is being planned by the Boy Scouts. The recrea tion departmeni is considering the Scouts' proposai for the nature trail, and is hoping to be able te save eight of the trees frorn the highway interchange for Sthis project.
