Bantams lose to host Por The Whitby Bantam club, which has been handling most of the opposition on the E.O.B.A. Bantam circuit with- out too much difficulty on the strength of some. out- standing pitching, had a look at the losing side of the picture when they dropped a 6-4 decision to host Port Hope. Although Whitby outhit the home club 10-7, the Port Hope tean was able to put its hits together for runs and this triumph. Rick Dunphy, who was charged with the loss, yielded seven hits. Greg Puchalski hadi a big night at the bat with a triple and threc singles; Steve Parrott had a double and a single, Gary Shearer came through with a pair of singles; and Button, Button, Who's got the Button? Whitby play their next home game at Peel Park on July 7 with Port Hope the visitors. The K of C Tyke club is suffering the pains of inex- perience this season, their first after and absence of two years, and they dropped another decision, this one to Peterborough 21-2. The Petes only had six hits but they were able to capitalize on Whitby errors and bases on balls to run up the lop-sidied score. Jeff Lee and Larry MacDonald were the only Whitby hitters Redmen defeat Stars Tom Christie turned in an excellent goaltending perfor- mance to lead the Brooklin Redmen to a 16-10 win over the visiting Owen Sound North Stars in an Ontario Lacrosse Association Major game. Redmen play in Brampton Thursday and are at home to Six Nations July 10 at 8:30 p.m. at Brooklin Arena. to hit safely each with a single. To add to the woes of the Whitby club, which are the result . of nothing other than the adjusting to the higher level of competi- tion, the K of C club has been having an- extremely difficult time lining up practice time and, with a club which is as green as the Whitby entry, practice time and lots of it is a must. The Dunedins split with Oshawa in a back to back to set in E.O.B.A. Midget action. In the opener in Whitby, the Legionaires recorded a 3-2 victory, tne first win for the Legionaires after 10 straight defeats. John Heaslip went all the way for the Dtinedins and deserved a better fate as he came through with his most impressive pitching chore of the season and pitched well enough to get a win. The Dunedins continued, how- ever, to carry woefully weak bats managing only four hits off Oshawa hurler Tommy Brabin, two of them bunts. Jody Turner acconted for tw. of the Whitby safeties, with John Heffer and Mike Heffer adding singles. In suffering the loss, Heaslip yielded six hits and struck out nine but his most impressive statistic was his three bases on balls. Defen- sive highlight of the night for the Dunedins was a major league stop in the sixth by Jody Turner who went far to his left from his spot as short stop, going to the first base side of the bag for the pick up and a perfect throw to first to get the out. The scene shifted to Kinsmen Stadium for the second half of the bill and the Dunedins managed to eke out a 9-8 win to split the series. John Heaslip, came into the game in relief in the eighth inning with an 8-8 deadlock and, with a brief one-inning stint in which his mates managed to pick up the winning run, came home with a victory. Cam Murkar started on the mound for Whitby, but his control, usually his big asset, wasn't sharp and he was frequently struggling, getting behind the batters. He was tagged for- nine hits and, although he had nine strikeouts, he got t Hope into trouble giving the Legionaires free passes. The Dunedins managed to improve their offence, corning through with seven hits, but the club is not getting the clutch hits with men on, which often spell the difference between victo:y and defeat. Mark Tutton, with a double and two singles, led the Whitby club at the plate; Jody Turner had a double and a single; Cam Murkar, Peter Foràn and Mike Sorichetti added singles. The game, played almost from the start in a drizzle which ranged from light to heavy, went the full nine innings. On Sunday the Dunedins finished up their busy week, Itsing 8-5 to Peterborough in a gane where they learned the hard way that there's more than one inning in a ballgane. Whitby opened the scorfng as if they were going to make a rout of the affair running up a 5-0 lead in the first inning but that was the end of the Dunedin attack. The Whitby club has run into serious trouble in being unable to amount any kind of effective offence. At the midget level, unearned runs cai come off a hurler who is having an off day with his control and struggling, or the occasional run is given away by the opposition on errors, but, to come up with consis- tent wins, a club has to go out and get runs when they are needed, and lately the Dunedins have fallen short. John Parrott gave way to John Heaslip in relief and· they yielded nine hits and notched 10 strikeouts. For Whitby, Jody Turner, John Parrott, Paul Clugsten and Doug Shearer each had singles. Builders win The Builders, in a Tuesday home contest, scored an 18-14 victory over the Hamilton Bengals. Ken Colley scored five goals for Whitby; Neil Atkinson, four; John Jordan, Tim Lintner and Jim Branton, two each; Larry Graham, Ron McCoy, and Cam Devine, one each. Les Reed had eight assists. 8TRACK TAPES $2.99 ALBUMS 99c to $4.99 Available At Whitby Electronics Record Dept. 668-2112 CB RADIO IRoyce i 612 MUNTZ with $220e FR 'FREE Roof Mount Antenna Sales & Service WHITBY ELECTRONICS 122 Dundas St. W., Whitby LEAlìN TO SAIL AT AILING SCH Iy ARINA Lt '24 hours of instruction PRICE $10500 CALL 668-4371 P.O.
