Fait General Meeting:' A disappoà ting crowd of 40 people, including the executive, attended the faîl general meeting of the West Lynde Comm-unity Association hield last Thursday niglit in the West Lynde Public School. It.was too bad hat the, attendance was as low as it was because a fuit agenda of items was on the table for discuission. At the top of the list was a verbal report on the future of Central Park by Recreation Director Wayne Deveau. Mr. Deveau reported that, beginning this week, fi and tops.oi1 will be put into the park with the terrain to be contoured according to the approved plan. Following this, the park will be seeded so. that beginning next spring proper grass will be growing in the park. Mr. Deveau also reported that ahl things being equal next spring will see the final landscaping of the park and the construction of the walkways. To date, the park has cost approximately $2 5,000, being the cost of the tennis courts and playground equipment, and the fill, topsoil, and seed operation will cost in the neighbourhood of $22,000. Next year's work could add another $60,000 to the overali cost of developing Central Park. Mr. Deveau also reported that the manufac- turer of the playground equipment will be inspecting the slidà es, etc. to determine what might be done to improve the safety aspects. It was, all in ail, a postive report on the status of Central Park. Another itemn of interest, was the news that the commrunity centre - day care centre - credit union had gone by the boards. The meeting also spent considerable time discussing the overcrowding in the two elementary schools (West Lynde and St. John's) serving our area, and heard a report that building permits had been applied for by the developers of the two higlirises. These building permits would cover two more highrises or approximatelv 180 townhouse units. At a meeting in the Centennial Building Sept. 21, Lions President Bill Son.- chetti presented Mr. Wood- ward with a plaque bearing the following. inscription: "Certificate of appreciation, presented to Jack Woo dward from the Whitby Lions Club for outstanding and dedicated service to the communiity while chairman of the County Town Carnival, Sept. 1976". "Jack is a salesmnan; that is why lie can put across things so well", said Mr. Sorichetti, who thanked Mr. Woodward for lis assistance to the Lions Club each year with their Bavarian Beer Garden. Mayor Jim Gartshore also offered a tribute to Mr. Woodward, stating that he was the driving force behind the County Town Carnival and was able to obtain the co-operation of the town council and service groups to put on a happy event which meant much to many people in Whitby. "Mn. Peter Perry, Mr. Cù'unty Town Carnival, and Mr. Woodward; they're al the same", said Mayor Gartshore. He related how Mr. Woodward had corne to Whitby 16 years ago with Dunlop tire, and as presently thinking of retiring. "I look forward sometimes with a littie trepfidation and some glee to sec what lie wiil do for this town when be lias his whole day to devote to it", said Mayor Gartshore. Mayor Gartshore also com- mended the Lions Club for giving Mr. Woodward special recognition for bis work with the County Town Carnival. Mn. Woodward replied by stating that it- was a real pleasure to have the Lions associated with the carnival for the past eight years, and their beer tent was a big part of the festivities. "I consider this an award to Mrs. Woodward as well as myself", said Mr. Woodward, paying tribute to the work bis wife lihas also done for the carnival.
