After a few months, the project ran into financial difficulties, and the work *,stopped. Since then, the Town- of Whitby and the Region of Durham have been trying to get the job going again. Late in August 1976 a new consortium of . owners. was formed under the name of Greater Whitby Properties. The partners are Alpha Forming Corporation Ltd., one of the contractors for the original project; Bayside Investmnent Corporation; and Rosswood Properties Ltd. They are proceeding vldth construction of a $5 million, 120-room hotel, but it may not necessarily receive a Howard Johnson's franchise, says Richard Spence, Durham Region's development officer for Whitby. Mr. Spence expects that the main floor of the hotel wiil be open for business and the first rooms ready for occupancy in the spring of 1977. Construction wiiI continue until a full six floors are compieted. In addition to the liotel, there are plans to provide a gas station on the site, and there is the possibility that a twin cinema may also bc construct.ed, says Mr. Spence, 7he hotel is pianned to be fully licenced, with dining room and complete banquel facilities. "This hotel is a very positive feature in selling the industrial lands in the area", says Mr. Spence. The land to the north of the hotel has been purchased by another consortium of developers, and a nuînber of proposais for commercial deveiopment are being discussed with the regional deveiopment officer.
