WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 8,1976e PAGE 9 '-Cyril Wick, a past president of the Brooklin Horticultuiral Society received a special Ontario Horticultural Associa- tion Service Certifîcate at the annual mee tin gof the Brooklin society November 24. The highest award a horti- culturalist can receive, it was presented to Mr. Wick by Miss Viola Gillion of Mouint Albert, District Five director of the Ontario Horticultural Association. Mr. Wick is well known throughout the Durham Region for his work in horti- culture. Among bis achieve- ments is the reorganization of the Ajax Garden Club. .Mr. Wick has been growing vege tables and flowers al bis life, and his retirement years have been dedicated to pass- ing on his knowledge to others. He has been a guest speaker at many of the societies in the district, as well as a guest speaker at the W hitby YMCA take-a-break program. For the past two, years he has taught classes in gardening at Durham College in Oshawa. He was instrumental in working with the Town of Whitby in an advisory capa- city when the town was planning its fîrst publie allot- ment gardens. Mr. Wick lias also looked after and super- vised înany civic plantings done by the Brooklin Horticultural Society in the area. Mr. Wick's dream for years was that Brooklin should have its own parkette or point of interest in the community, and he noticed that miost visitors to the village go to the arena. Hence, when the new addition to the Brooklin, Me morial arena began in 197 1, Mr. Wick approached the Town of Whitby on behaîf of the Brooklin Society to draw up a plan to improve the area in front of the building and make a truly mnemorial flower bed where the Brooklin Legio)n branch could hold their mernorial services. Also, when his son Cordoni served as president, a lôcust tree was planted at a cere- mony in memnory of Brooklin's great horticulturalist and agricultLlralist Heber Down, and a benchi placed in the parkette. Mr. Down died in May 1 972, and the memorial planting took place a year later. The work at the Brooklin Mernorial Arena is almost complete and with the recent paving of the parking lot it can be completed next spring. Cyril Wick, past president of the Brooklin Horticultural Society, receives an Ontario Hlorticultural Association Service Certifîcate from Viola Gillion, District Five director of the Association. The award, the highest which can be given to a horticulturalist in Ontario, was presented to Mr. Wick in recognition of bis services to Brooklin and district over a period of many years. Police said four wallets were stolen fromn a dressing room, and someone took a fire extinguisher and sprayed the inside of a car in the parking lot. The extinguisher was tossed away in the lot, p olice said.
