Mr. Manning will retire on April 1, 1977, after nearly 30 years in the civic admninis- tration of Ontario County and the Durham'Region. He was appointed Cierk-Treasurer of Ontario County in 1947, and served in that capacity until regional goverment took over the county on Jan. 1, 1974. Mr'. Manniniz was appointed acting clerk of the region in August 1973, Chief Adminis- trative officer in 1974, and last week he became an executive assistant to the Regional Chairman, in charge of special projects. Mr. Manning, who will be 65 in March 1977, was born and brought up in Brooklin, and continues to reside in that community. His. grandfather Thomas Gi was responsible for awak- ening, in him an intercst in listory and politics which he out his life. He started his working career aý a teacher in 1933 at the Kinsale Public School where he taught grades one to eight until 1938. When the Second World War led to the establishment of a defense plant at the present site of Ajax, Mr. Manning became one of its first employees, working as a medical clerk and later as a transit officer. After the war, Mr. Manning, but his'political experience led hlm to the position of clerk-treasurer of Ontario County. Mr. Manning began bis political career in 1938 when he was elected to the Whlitby Township Council. In 1940 he was asked to becomne the township's clerk and welfare officer, and held that position for two years before being re-elected to the counicil.
