Written by the Russian composer Peter Ilyicb Tcbaikovsky, this ballet about a littie girl and ber nutcracker bas won the bearts of millions of chul- dren and adults since il was first performed during tbe Christmnas season of 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffman, tbe ballet opens with a party at the home of a little girl, Clara. Among the gifts under the tree is a nutcracker, shaped like a soldier. Clara is de- lighted witb the uinusual gift but unfortunately, her brother breaks it and that night Clara dreams about the nutcracker.
