In press reports on Sandy's life there has always been confusion as to whether he is a native of Witby or Oshawva. He was born in Oshawa and rnoved to Wh-itby at the age of seven. He attended-Dr. Robert Thornton Public Sehool and Andierson Collegiate, and played basebail andl hockey. lie and his friends enjoyed going down to the old Whitby arena in the winter to skate, and there is stili one friend frornhlgh school in Whitby that Sandy keeps in touch with regularly. In high school,Sandy tried out for the senior football tearn but was rejected becauise he wvas too small. Today hie stands five foot threc and weig-hs 110 pounds. Out of Iuck as far as foot- ball was concerned, lie tried out for the wrestling teami, where he met with consider- able success. He wrestled 35. times in comipetition and was defeated only three times. In 1965 at the age of 16, Sandy finished second in an Ail- Ontario chamipionship, and won the novice trophy at Andersoni Collegiate. fie still hias thiese trophies at bis parents' homne. - Sandy hiad neyer been on a horse until he was 13, when his parents took hirn trail riding. Sandy spent the Easter holidays at Woodbine race track cleaning out stals and walking horses to cool them down. After a year ofclcaning out stalls, Sandy started xvorking as a groom, in charge of five horses, working seven days a week from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. "He had a lot of determina- lion", says his mother. He then proceeded to galloping horses on the track, leading horses onto the track for races, and breaking year- lings.
