He has gone into partner- ship with one of Whitby's longest-serving lawyers, Hugh Nicol, under the name' of Nicol and Irwin. Mr. Irwin, a member of the town counicil in 1973, was involved in municipal work in his former practice, and will be .again devoting his time mainly to municipal law. He was called to the Bar in 1967, and practised law in Whitby fro m then until October 1974 when he and his sister Marion O'Donnell became involved in the management of their fam~ily farm, Red Wing Orchards, and its roadside fruit and vegetable stand. While in the law practice, Mr. Irwin was a partner with Bill Hobson from 1968 to 1971, and fromi 1971 to 1974 with Coath, Irwin, Livingstone and Johnston. "One or the other was being operated and usually by a small involved family group which helped keep labor costs in line. While we have been working on our market, we have been unable to spend much tiine developing new ideas on how ta modernize or strearnline aur orchard operations", said Mr. Irwin. And so, in an attempt to cut down our costs and t'O have tirne enough to re-think aur orchard program, we have decided to close our roadside market".'- Starting this rnonth, Red Wing Orchards wîll be retailing its apples at its cold storage building on the north side of F-lighway 2. Other changes inçluide reducing the size of the orchard by cutting down 1 ,000 trees, and introdticing a "pick-youir-own", prograrn, probably in the fall of 1977. A total of 452 placements we re made through the thiree offices, up from 275 placements in December 1975. As a resuit of these agreements, 64 people will benefit from both training and employment within the various companies in our community. The Industrial Training Program provicles financial incentives ta em- ployers in filling skilled job openings byhiring and training staff. The Program also offers partial financial reimnburse- ment of trainee wages when company operations expand and more employees are needed, or when present employees need to be upgrad- ed to retain their jobs. At the end of December there were 72 people receiving academnie upgrading at Durham College in preparation ta enter the varjous skill training courses. At present there are 194 students in these courses. sponsored by the Canada Manpower Centre. There are currently two seàts available in the machine shop course.
