Myrtle museum will be demolished The Whitby Historical Society will soon be without a storage building for many of its artifacts, following a recent committee decision to demolish the Myrtle museum. The committee recommend- ed that the building be demolished in compliance with the property standards bylaw, as it would cost $8,000 to make the necessary repairs. The building was built in 1872 as a temperance hall, and since 1932 it has served as Myrtle's community hall. From 1970 to 1972 the Whitby Historical Society operated it as a museum, until it moved its museum to the Lynde house. Since 1972, the Historical Society has used the Myrtle building for storage. The town council members expressed concern that if the town is asking property owners to upgrade their buildings or demolish them, the saine standard should be maintained with town-owned buildings. The Myrtle building became town proper- ty after the 1968 amalgama- tion with Whitby Township, and is rented to the Historical Society. Fred Cane, assistant curator for the historical society, reported to the committee that the building 1 11 should be preserved because of its historical significance as a Temperence Hall, a rare type of building of which few remain in the province. The members of council said the decision to demolish the Myrtle museum was a "regretful" one, but there was no money in the budget to make the necessary repairs. Subdivision plan The Whitby Planning Department has received a proposed plan of subdivision for a 19.25 acre site, north of the CPR tracks, between Garden Street and the Bradley Farm subdivision. The proposed subdivision would have 146 units of which, 46 are street town houses, 37 link houses, 28 semi-detached units and 36 single family homes. A public meeting was held April 4 to discuss the plan of subdivision. Frederick B. Bagg & Barry L.
