Free Press Photo About 130 members and former members of, the County Town Singers partici- pated in a gala reunion at the Genosha Hotel in Oshawa Saturday to mark the lOth anniversary of the choir. Three key personalities in the County Town Singers were singled ont for special gifts at the reunion. Ian Forbes, president since 1973, was presenited with a gave] îhounted on a wooden plaque, pianist Marg Webber received a framned color photograph of hierseif at a piano, and director Jim Ashley was presented with a replica of an l8th centuryý music stand hand-crafted by Azel Guest, of Wlitby. Bert Heaver, whio has hiosted a nuniber of the Singers' concerts, acted as mnaster of cerernonies for the eývening and along with Mr. Forbes, sang a humourous renditioni of "Thanks For the Memories" Counicillor Tomn Edwards, representing Mayor Jim Gartshore expressed how proud the town was of the efforts of the County Town Singers over the past 10 years, not onlv at their regular concerts but at special civic events such as carol singing at the Four Corners. Councillor Edwatds paid tribute to the Singers' contributions to twinning with Longueuil Quebec and Feldkirch in Austria, and particularly recalled the sing- ing of "La Ronde" at the first Longueuil twinning in 1969. Whule he praised the Singers for their contributions to Whitby, Councillor Bd- wards warned that they mnay flot be able to get financial support from the town for. the printing of their May concert brochure because of budget restrictions. Mr. 1-eaver introduced Des and Marjorie Newman, the only honorary members of the County Town Singers, and Charlie Rycroft, one of the first masters of cerernonies for the Singers, proposeld a toast to the choir. lie recalled how Whitby England was the birthplace of English song, through the efforts of- St. Cadmen, and said the singers had provided encouragement for local groups and a richniess for the community for "1l0 won derful golden years". "Ten years jsn't really that long a time, but it is in the life of amateur independent choirs", said Jirm Ashley. " was told if we got through three to five years we'd be doing terrifie. "We have at.least one thing in common--the love of singing. Audiences know we enjoy what we're doing". Mr. Forbes introduced Thoms Gary Gibney, another popular master of cere monies for the choir, and presented a centrepiece to Eve Heaver who organized the reunion.
