Look fomiliar? t's the Volkswagen Rabbit. But without even looking too closely, it could be one of any number of cars that have recently appeared on the market. Or are about f0. If imitation is the s'incerest form of flattery, we're very flattered. However, it's not the outside line of the Rabbit that makes it 50 revolutionary, it's what goes on underneath the line. ln the five intensive years of planning and innovation that if took ta create the Rabbit, if was continually designed from the inside ouf. Not'vice-versa, like many cors. Looks for looks sake was neyer our intention, and t haf's where we drew the line. For instance, since our trans- verse engine was mounted sideways up front, it created a huge amnount of room for people and luggage in back. (For more room we might odd, thon any other cor ifs size.) And since the engine took up less room, thof engineering foct plus extensive wind tunnel tests deferrnined the dramnatic siope of. the hood. The sleek hatchback rear end design and the sporty line of the Rabbit's front were no accidents either. Even though they were in part refined by hundreds of test collisions over several years. Function followed soifety. And form follows function. AIl along the lîne.
