Selby, Chair- man of the Oshawa Harbor Commission, will discuss recent development and future plans for the Oshawa- Whitby harbor systerm at the annual meeting of the Whitby Chamber of Commerce. The meeting will be held Nov. 21 at the Chalet Restaurant, with cocktails at 6:30 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. and will include the election of officers for 1978. Anyone wishing to attend must confirm reserva- tions by calling the Chamber at 668-4506 by Nov. 18 at the latest. UKRAINIAN EVENING The Whitby Historical Society will have a special Ukrainian program at its next meeting Nov. 22 at 8 p.m. in the Fairview Lodge Audi- torium. The program will feature dancing and a display of handicrafts as well as the story of their origin. Every- one is welcome to attend. DANCE The Whitby District Boy Scout dance will be held at 8:30 p.m. Nov. 26 at the Masonic Hall on Cochrane Street. Tickets are available at $10. a couple by calling 668-4925. NATIVE ART LECTURE Elizabeth McLuhan, ex- ecutive assistant for the Irlian Community Secretariat at the Ministry of Culture and Rec- reation, will give a special lecture on native art at the Whitby Arts Station Gallery Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. She re- ceived her M.A. in North American Indian Art with a special study of the Cree and Ojibway painters of Ontario. The film "Paradox of Norval Morrisseau" will be shown. LIBRARY FILMS For Professional Dev- elopment Day, Nov. 30, there will be films for children at the Whitby Public Library starting at 2:30 p.m. CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS A demonstration of how to make Christmas table decorations will be held at the Whitby Public Library Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m. Reg- istration is limited and there will be a charge for materials only. SENIOR CITIZENS There is lots of activity at the Whitby Seniors Acti- vity Centre this month. On Nov . 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. there will be a bazaar at the centre. There will be a draw for an Afgan and Pillow at 1:30 p.m. Home baking will be available and lunch will be served for 35 cents. Also on Nov.19 there is a Hallowe'en Dance Party at 7:30 p.m. at the centre, with music by a disc jockey. Any- one wishing to wear a cos- tume is encouraged to do so. A general meeting of members of the activity centre will be held Nov. 26 at 2 p.m. One of the matters to be dis- cused is a proposed increase in membership fees to $1.50 in January 1978, and $2 in 1979. The board reports that rising expenses for the centre require an increase in member- ship fees. Another point for discussion will be a nominal charge tor instructional courses which are presently free of charge. All members are urged to attend this important meet- ing. Some of the current ac- tivities at the centre include a nutrition course the first Friday of each month at 7:30 p.m., a fun and fitness club, macrame and weaving, pottery classes and bus trips. Registration for a bus trip to the Greenwood race track Nov. 23 will be on Nov. 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be room for 48 people on one bus. The bus leaves the centre at 10:30 a.m. a.m. Nov. 23 STOCKING BAZAAR The Annual Stocking Stuffer Bazaar, featuring baking, crafts and flea market items, will be held Friday November 25 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Durham Centre for the Handicapped, Whitby. All proceeds go to the Volunteer Association of the Durham Centre to buy Christmas gifts for the residents. SNOWFLAKE BAZAAR St. John's Anglican Church, Port Whitby will have its annual ACW Snow- flake Bazaar and Tea Nov. 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the church hall Featured tables will include a treasure trove, bread basket, book shop, sewing basket and gift sliop. SPECIAL SPEAKER Dr. Reg Stackhouse, principal of Wycliffe College, will be the guest preacher at St. John's Anglican Church Sunday Nov. 20 at I1 arn. This is Wycliffe's .Centennial Year, and the college has a close association with St. John's Church for it sent student ministers to preach there from 1889 to 1919. Wycliffe College is an Angli- can ministry school in Toronto. Composer at coilege Canadian composer Keith Bissell was the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Ontario Registered Music Teathers' Association held at the Ontario Ladies' College Tuesday. A Canadian Composers' Recital will be held at the college at 8 p.m. Nov. 22 when pupils of the Oshawa Branch of the Association will perform Mayor asks the Legion Coming Events Mayor Jim Gartshore' made a passionate plea to the Wlitby branch of the Royal Canadian Legion Friday to assist in the fight against Quebec separatism. "We are today in a battle for the survival of our nation", he told the Legion rnember at the annual Reme- mubrance Day banquet in the Legion hall. "There are those ded- icated to the destruction of Canada as a nation," he said. "This is a battle for the hearts and minds of a seg- ment of our country, and a battle we must not lose." The mayor urged the Legion members as a group and as individuals to affiliate with Legion branches in Quebec. "This is something you can do that is very worth- while," he said. "Govern- ments can only do so much. He told the Legion members that they should instil tradition and pride in our society, and eliminate the word 'permissive, "then national unity will not be a problem," he said. Speaking of the armed forces, he said: "The quality is still there; the seed needs to be nurtured.
