Active role is planned for Chamber in 11978 says President Go'rd Hanna In. 1977" the Whitby Chamber of Commerce ele- vated itself considerably, and in 1978 can do' better, President- Gord Hanna said at the inagural meeting of the Chamber for 1978. -Mr. Hanna said he consid- ered the Chamber can be a more vital organization in the town, and went on to add that private enterprise îs total- ly.dependent on good govern- ment. Mayor Jim Gartshore, *the guest sp'eaker for the meeting, Jan. 9, told Mr. Hanna a very strong Chamber ofCommerce taking a stand on matters in the community can be a real asset for the council. Mr. Hanna sàid he con- sidered the Chamber is strengthened by the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital the towri's largest employer,. be- comning a member in 1977, Report From Queen's Park' Cont'd From P. 5 munity centres, and with small groups in private homes. The end result of this was that a full time Enviornmental Inspector was engaged. For the foregoing, environmnental reasons, the Duffin Creek Pollution Control Centre and the trunk sewer system is being developed as an Environment Ontario "Provincial Projct", wherely the Mnistry of the Environment is responsible for ail design and construction. The Regional Municîpalities of Durham and York will operate and main- tain the works within., their respective regfions, with the exception of the Duffin Creek Sewage Treatment Plant, which will be operated by the Mnistry. The Ontario Ministry of the Environment is providing a 15% subsidy to underwrite capital construction costs, and is arranging financing through the tederal Central Mortgage and HousinI Corporation. The Provincial investment will be recovered tluough a service charge to the regional municipalities for ail sewage treated and received. This service rate will be re;- viewed on a regular basis. The Duffmn Creek Pollution Control Centre represents one way in which your Provincial Govemnment is recogniz- ing its responsibilities in the provision of much needed oewer treatmnent facilities and the creation of much needed entnploment, but stili protecting in .very way possible our and its administrator Michael C'Keefe becoming a director in 1978. "The hospital was n eyer totally accepted ini our town, and this is the properf time for better understandiiïg be- tween the hospital and the town, so we can see it is an as- set, not a liability," said Mr. Hanna., Mr. Hanna said that down- town development is "a very strong must in 1978," and he also hoped to see the Brooklin study completed. He said the role of the Chamber of Commerce is to encourage the town counicil to provide the town with the best govemmentpossible, and pledged to do that in 1978. WHIfTBY FREF PRFVSS. WEDNESDAY.
