WHITB3Y SEA'CADET INSPECTION Last Týursday the annual inspection for the Whitby'Sea qonsumers should beware of fly-by-night home ipoe m itco4itractors at this time of year. The Consumer Services 0ffcesc q the Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Rela tions rec ive ý many complaints- about, driveway pavers, pool instalers, renovators,. roofers and other home improvement businesses every spring. Most of the people in such businesses are honest and competent. But there are few bad apples who do poor jobs or dont finish what they start and disappear before the consumer can seek redress. Numerous complaints concern contractors who have not comfpleted the work as agreed to in the contract. However, consumer should be able to avoid such problems by following these guidelines: . Have a firm idfea of what you want done before work begins. Changing.your mind haîf way, through the job can be very costly. -Deal with businesses whlch have earned goo rputations ini thecommunity. -Make sure any construction conforms to local by-laws, and if required get a building permit. - (i«e--à 4east three written estimates poiding a'detailed list of ail Work to be done, including dlean-up. -Ask the contractor for the names and addresses of people "for whom he has recently completed work and check to -see if these people are satisfied. - Don't pay more than 10 per cent down as a deposit and don't pay in full until ail work is completed. -Get war ranty details in writing. The annual meeting of the Dr. J.0., Ruddy General Hospital will be held in the Hospital cafeteria on June 21 at 8 p.m. The purpose of the meeting will be to elect the officers for 1978 and only as good as the comp,.any backing it. - Get starting and completion dates in writing. You won't be happy if, for instance, your new swimming pool isn't complete until September. Under The Mechan ics Lien Act, you are requiré'd to withhold 15 par cent of the total amount of the contract for 37 days af ter completion of -the job. This protects you if the contractor fais to pay the subcontractor or employees. - If a contract is involve d, make sure it clearly specifies ail work to be done as weil as starting and completion dates. In addition to these general points, consumers should heed this advice ,from the Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations when dealing with contractors in the following fields. Driveway pavers: Be wary of contractors who.say they are in, the neighbourhood only for the day and off er bargain prices; remember that the contractor giving the cheapest estimate won't necessarily db the best job; once you sign a contact it is a legal and binding document so make sure it spacifies ail work to be done before you signi; When the contractor quotes the asphaît depth, make sure he is referring to compacted asphaît. About two inches of compaqted asphait is normal. Poor installers: Obtain a, written' statement, of who is responsible for any ,problems,, theseller, installer, subcontrac-- tor or manufacturer; make> sure your pool conforms to municipal by-lawvs, ,Inclùding fencing; other costs include fencing and water wýhich in some municipalities -has to be trucked-in at considerable expense. Roofers: Pay a reputable roofer for. an inspection to determine whether you tieeda pew roof or'repairs;- remember that a long-termf warranty can be worthless if the company doean't survive as long as the warranty .applies; mnake sure the estimate includes ahl costs which may include stripping old shingles, dlean-up and carpentry work.- The Provincial Government, offers many services to assist consumers. In addition* to haIindling *complaints at the Consumer Services Office in Toronto, free material on home repairs, insulation, consumer protection, mail'order, phony charities and many related areas is available.
